OK, been backing up my Sopranos box sets. For season 3 and 4, three disks in each have three episodes, meaning an average shrink of around 58%. I rip with DVD Decryptor, then use Remake (an older version 1.4.6) to remove the french menus and studio idents. The disks are pretty sparse, and I like commentaries, so there isn't much more to take out.

The first one I used nero recode on, and was pretty happy with the result, although there is a definite shimmer to detailed surfaces as the first frame of each GOP is sharp, and the rest progressively softer. Having read great things about rebuilder, I thought I'd give it a go. (See my other posts about the problems I had getting it up and running - a reinstall of the components solved the problems).

I backed up the next disk, and was very happy with the results. No shimmer, hard to distinguish from the originals, worth the 3 pass 6 hour reencode.

So then I did the final disk. This time, when I went to burn the disk, it was slightly too big. Funny, I thought, can see what else I can remove. So I loaded it into recode thinking I needed to give it a little squeeze, and recode said no compression was required. So now I'm confused. Why will recode be happy with the size, and burning rom say it's too big.

Then it hits me - subtitles. There are about 15 sets of subtitles, which I have recode configured to remove automatically. This was enough to get the size right. However I didn't want to run it through recode, as it takes that same amount of time at 100% compression as it does for 75%, making me wonder if all my good work with rebuilder would be undone.

Bottom line, I solved this problem by a trip back through remake, removing one set of end credits.

My question is (and sorry for the long preamble, just setting the scene) :

Is there a way using only Remake and Rebuilder to remove unwanted subtitles. I could not find a setting in either to do it. Would an update of remake solve this problem ? Or a change to Rebuilders sizing ?

If you are still with me, thanks for reading and any suggestions you may have.

Well I don't know about Recode, but when using DVDShrink if it says 100% you are better off changing it to 'no compression', the video will then be untouched.

Doesn't the latest Rebuilder allow for choosing/dropping all audio and subs?

I have it set to remove all but English audio and subtitles, but they were still there after the rebuild.
