I am currently using Windows ME to do all my video editing.

    Should I upgrade to XP?

Your input will be very helpful.

    Thanks.

XP or W2000 would be a big improvement.

I'm not going to help you one bit, because first off... If it ain't broke don't fix it and second I'd never have that ME crap on a PC I own.

    now flip a coin

Oh why do I think ME is crap? Well it is a MS product but so is XP. I've never read one tech review that thought it was worth upgrading from Win95. And God knows 95 was crap. Besides XP is the system they prommised when they forced 95 on us in 96. XP or even 2000 are more stable platforms.

If your system is better than a 1ghz with at least 512k ram then upgrade to XP, if not then think about 2000

I have a 1ghz with 256 ram. Is it good enough?

  7. XP and 2000 are most definitely more stable OS's. Haven't got a blue screen I didn't deserve in XP or 2000.... 98, ME... more than I can count.

Also, 2K and XP support NTFS (Better File System Structure) and will also support larger files... I think ME is capped at 2 gigs.

I have had files as big as 3 gigs.

  9. ME, as is 98, 98SE and 95b, limited to 4gig, because of FAT32.
NT, 2K, and XP, using NTFS have no such limitation.
    Well...they do, but I think it's 2 terabytes.

It does not have to be 1ghz for xp. I have installed xp on many under 1ghz.

I use both XP Pro and Win ME for video editing and find no difference in performance. What kind of problems are you having?

Is your system crashing, maybe XP would be a possibility?

Windows ME stands for Windows Multiple Errors. Get XP pro (not home) or 2000 pro.

Like ********, everybody's got an opinion. I have issues with M$ too, but I don't think Windows-bashing is in vogue anymore. Time to come up with a new whine.

My wife swears by ME. She wouldn't let me put XP on her machine. It turns out that ME is a good match for her hardware, an HP laptop. Win2K happens to be a good match for my Compaq laptop. XP Pro happens to be an excellent match for my work PC, an HP workstation. Working good on one machine doesn't guarantee it'll work as well on another. The reverse is true - just because it didn't work well for you doesn't mean it won't work for him. Opinions about M$ OS'es are almost meaningless unless we were all using the same hardware ....apples and oranges my friends, apples and oranges

Try an OS and see for yourself. Don't take someone else's word for it

yeah, old athlon 650 with 128 megs of ram. win98 worked, but BSOD'd all the time. so 2k should have been better. 2k could not install, simply crashed - every single time. xp, lovely. smoooth. perfect.

I have a Dell work laptop that runs and runs all day with Win2K, but chokes on XP. Our cable modem/home LAN server machine has been running Win98SE for years, without a single reinstall of the OS. It runs all the time and never crashes.

I suspect that's why Intel-based machines have that sticker "Designed for Windows 2000" or "Designed for Windows XP" right on the case.

Who knows, aside from greed, maybe Jobs and Wozniak saw the writing on the wall with the MacIntosh and that's why they didn't license a bunch of companies to make clones - because there would be no control over the hardware compatibility. IBM-based machines, on the other hand, popped up everywhere, with varying levels of quality control.

Well the only problem is the file size limit.

If it aint broke then everything is fine, besides you might break things in the process of upgrading.
I am starting to agree with BobV,

I might just wait to the end of the year and buy a new computer.

  18. 512k would be better.

I was using an 800mhz, but saw on FW you could get a Compaq 2.8ghz with 40gig HD, 256m for $229.00 after rebates. So I got that. They have a deal like that every now & then at Office Depot.

I agree with the if it ain't broke don't fix it. If you are having problems or have need for files 4gb or larger than by all means upgrade. I also agree with the idea of going to Pro instead of home. Windows Xp likes lots of ram, the more the marrier.... 256mb is an alright amount but you would probably benefit at having 512mb as a min. Getting a new system might not be a bad idea either, though with the things that are suppose to happen this year I would as suggested wait until the end of the year.....

AS far as the Compaq deal. .... My opinion... you get what you pay for or less with compaq. All of the low priced machines are just that low end machines. They don't upgrade well and just basic systems...

  21. I hated ME, it was like a million bugs/glitches/BSODs waiting to happen. Didn't work for me. Just 98SE with a few 2K features added.

I like 2K, XP Pro is OK.

Fedora rules even though i can't really use it much yet, i'm a linux n00b 8)
