Thats the thing making a copy of anything you own as a back up is perfectly acceptable and is what a lot of us do. You would only get shouted at if you said I want to back up the New Harry Potter film , because it hasn't been released on DVD and you obviously couldn't own a copy.
If you only have one drive thats no problem When you select copy disc the source and destination drives are the same , so when you hit burn it will rip the disc to a temporary folder on your HD and when its finished ripping it it will eject the disc and a box will pop up on screen asking for a blank disc. You put a blank in and hit OK it will the write to the balnk from that temp folder . Once complete the temp folder will be deleted.
Having one drive is NOT a problem.

Please at least try what andy's telling you. All his advice is sound in my opinion. I have done it 100's of times. For exactly the same reasons as you. I fact you will find your self makeing copies of the same disk again after you screw up the first copy. And don't try to tell me you can take good care of disks in your car, or in my case at work.
I personaly use Roxio CD creator not Nero, but the principals are the same. Also, don't us a RW disk for your car.
Thanks Mike -
Well that's just it guyz. I was able to do a copy with a rw and I tried it with roxio using a cd-r and lost 2 cds in total, with the first the system crashed and projected a blue error screen and the second started to copied and as it neared one track before its completion even though it didn't crash an error screw came up again with roxio. Then I tried it on a different OS using mp3 ripper where it worked.
Does anyone know of some type of chat room where you can ask all sorts of questions like these online? Or even a book to understand formats, tmpgenc virtualdub and bitrate etc I just have a basic knowledge. I can just about make a movie but I don't really understand what I am doing, just do this do that and it will work type of thing? -
You can check out the WHAT IS and HOW TO sections on this site in the bar at the left, and the FAQ under OTHER.

Often, it is a matter of finding the burning software that you are most comfortable with. Adaptec have long had a stigma of destroying more CDs than they create. In fact, once upon a time when I had a K6-2 rated at 300 Mhz, I found that uninstalling Adaptec Easy CD Creator was a necessary step in getting the damned thing to play DVD-Videos at all.

What I was looking for was a book I could buy so that I could read up on leisurely and find the answers to 1000s of questions posted here on a daily basis relating to making cds dvds audio etc, which tools to use and what terminologies mean. Alternatively, is there a chat room instead of a forum offering the same type of help.

If there was a book printed on the subjects here it would be so far out of date before it was even printed it wouldn't be worth getting.
As for a chat room , I don't know. But This is the biggest and best of it's kind and there are a lot of extremely knowledgable and helpful peoiple who hang around here.
I really don't see how a chat room would be beneficial to the help you get from here.

Everything you said there is contained in this site. -
I'd like to back up some of my original music audio.cdas, without ripping them into another format. The rip tools I've so far soon don't rip to cda. From what I see I cannot back it up directly using nero. So which is the best way to go about this? It can't be dragged and dropped, otherwise it creates a shortcut, it cannot be copied and pasted, otherwise it won't play without the original inserted. Any ideas. Luv to hear from u
