  1. Just bought a lead to connect my 1Ghz imac to my amp. I connected it all up and just presumed the sound would come out when I select the MD on my amp (connected it to the MD port). Is there anything else I need to do first? Are there any settings I need to change?

It should work fine, unless you've got several sets of speakers or headphones connected to the iMac, in which case, the other might be interfering. You can go to the Sound System Preference, Output tab, and try the various output devices, if there are several, and ensure that the volume is turned up and mute is disabled. Other than that, check the wiring, and ensure that other sources work ok with those inputs on your amp. Also, you might try hooking up headphones to the jack you've got the lead hooked up to on the iMac.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

  3. I've only got the standard speakers connected through the mini jack. In Sound System Preference Output tab only 'headphones' shows up for me to select? So there's only 1. Mute is disabled? Headphones work in the headphone hole but not in the one to the left?

I still can't get any sound after testing the amp?

The port that looks like a headphone jack but has a different symbol is, on my machine, a microphone port.
If it isn't broken, take it apart and find out why.
