I'm interested in getting some MXL DVD-R (the media code which I'm assuming only Maxell makes) but have read about fake disks coming out of Meritline & Supermediastore - 2 stores that are recommended as reliable out of lordsmurf's site and other places I've looked.

I decided to go with MXL because they seem to be top quality from everything I've read and I'm transferring family camcorder tapes to DVD so I consider these important and don't mind having to pay more.

So my question is where can I find a reliable source of these disks?
(is there any way to find out the media codes BEFORE you buy?)

search some of disturbed1's past posts too.
I also hear newegg has them in bulk

I buy mine at Walmart or Office Depot on sale

Realize MAXELL packages can also contain TYG01 (yellow) or RITEKG03 (blue)

Walmart, at least online, only lists 10 packs.
Believe or not there's no close Walmart to where I live .
Do they sell larger bulks than that.
Also, any way to tell before buying what the media id is?

So buy multiple packs, or try Office Depot which sells 25 packs.

    AFAIK, no.

Maxell, reportedly, has switched media codes from time to time (although usually using good stuff like Taiyo Yuden), so the only way to know for sure is to analyze the disks with something like DVD Identifier.

I have bought very good Maxell media on NewEgg.com.

If it is fake, then it's a damn good fake!

I've been buying mine at Walmart for $16.84 per 10-pack. These are the 4x DVD-R discs. They say MADE IN JAPAN and have always been either Maxell brand or Taiyo Yuden brand. I don't think they would put Ritek in their since it says MADE IN JAPAN.

Of course this only applies to the DVD-R the DVD+R I have no idea.

This is what the package looks like:

These come in full size CD style jewel cases. Not slim cases.

Please note that 3 Walmart stores near me do $16.84 and other's (across the country) have said the same BUT on the walmart website they charge $19.97

Meritline.com is where I get the branded Maxell by the 100 spindle.

I wish I could verify the media code, but those are a mystery to me since my burner sits in a firewire box and every app I've tried says the burner doesn't support the operation.

    Meritline's are MXLRG02 (4x DVD-R). ~$1.36 before shipping and handling.

Besides what was posted above, www.shopperwiz.com . $124 for 100 printables delivered to my door. Shopperwiz also has a great price on verbatim products too. Verbatim is slightly more expensive than Maxell.

Newegg only carries one type of the maxell. Don't remember if they are silver (shiny), or silver printable though.

I've bought the Maxell DVD+Rs from Walgreens, these were RICOHs.

    A couple of other places that sell Maxell's www.jandr.com , www.compuvest.com,

  11. The ones on Newegg (635127) are actually both...shiny silver and inkjet printable.

If not, they sure went a long way to make 'em look real. In a Maxell Cardboard box, maxell on the spindel, and even maxell on every hub of every disc, not to mention the MID being MXLRG02

If Walmart is not an option for you, Sears also has the 10 packs of these.

This week Sears advertised these for $19.99. You can print out a $5 off $20 in store coupon from here.
    https://www.citibank.com/us/cards/svc/cbna/content/images/sears/5_20.gif

Find something for another 50 cents or dollar like a blank video tape, or a connetor and bring your purchase to over $20 to get the $5 off.

Buy.com also has the 25 packs with free ship for around $33.
That is where I plan to purchase some from next time I run out.

Right now I still have plenty of these to burn through after the office depot buy one 15 pack spindle for 28.99 and get another 15 pack spindle free. Also have some of the 10 packs in jewel cases walgreens had on sale for $15.

For DVD-R I always use MXL or TY made Fujis for my critical burns. and ProdiscS03 and Ridata G04 for other stuff.

Thems are it, LS.....I'm on my 3rd spindle and they burn like a dream....exactly the same as the Walmart/Walgreen yellow tops....same Kprobe, CDSpeed, etc......authentic. You can't find a better white matte printable, imho. All three of my burners and three standalones love this stuff. If they were hub printable, I'd have a chubby.....oh wait, I have a chubby now.

  17. Walmart, yep. Or, if you're lucky, Sam's Club.

I can't remember what Sam's had DVD-Rs for, but I got a pack of 50 Maxell CDRs for about $10.00 (on a spindle).

I've never seen 4.38GB Maxell recordable DVDs for sale at Sam's Club or on their website, only the camcorder 1.4GB ones, and I go to Sam's Club often.

For 4.3GB recordable DVD, I've only seen Verbatim DVD+R/-R/+RW/-RW there. From the 8X DVD+Rs made in Singapore, to the 4X MCC DVD-Rs made in Taiwan, to ? speed DVD+RWs.

Costco carries recordable DVDs at times, although their website doesn't reflect it IIRC. I can't remember the brand I saw there last.

Can you do me a favor and tell me which type of Maxell media DVD-R media did you buy, 635127, 8, or 9? What color was the sticker on the spindle? I am also expecting to buy a spindle at shopperwiz soon and am curious if their stickers match with NewEgg.

  23. There is no sticker on the spindle....at least for the 635129's from Shopperwiz....I don't think it matters too much. I've only seen retail bulk from Maxell since the release of the MXLRG02 (1-4x). I don't think they ship large quanties for distributor repacking anymore, since the issue with the fake 2x media. If you see 63512X retail in 50 packs, you should be okay. These are packed at the factory. They all seem to be branded (on hub). I haven't seen too many sites that offer unbranded, OEM Maxell media any more.

You can feel safe buying from Shopperwiz & Newegg....They are not a media-only, re-packaging warehouser. They only sell factory sealed retail media....a safe bet. Some of those media-only sites are the ones that deal in large bulk and re-package....slip in a few cheaper, fakes....make a few extra bucks at buyers expense.

Well the 635129s from Meritline are advertised as having a sticker on their spindle. I don't understand this discrepency.

I bought the white matte 635129.
It says 'Maxell DVD-R 4.7GB 1-4x speed' on the hub of each disk.
I didn't see any colored sticker on the spindle.
The writing surface of the disks is purple.
    Hope that helps.

The ones I bought from meritline are gold in color, have "Maxell" on top, also have "DVD-R. 4.7GB, 2Hrs ( :P ), the DVD logo, and a little picture of a guy sitting in a chair with his hair blowing back. No sticker on the cake box though.

1st burn went perfect writing 4.07GB out of 4.7GB.

FYI today's (6/19) Best Buy circular ad listed a 50 pack of Fuji DVD -R disks for $39.99 ($79.99 - $40 instant rebate)

FYI, those fujis 50 packs could be Prodisc and not TY. Prodisc is okay but they can be had without a brand name on them for 1/3 to half the price.

The only FUJI packs of DVD-R discs that are Taiyo Yuden are the packages that say MADE IN JAPAN and the only packages that say that are the 5 packs (hard to find) and the 10 packs (easy to find).

Last time I looked CompUSA had the 10-packs for $19.99 each and so did either Office Max or Office Depot (I forget which but I think it was Office Max).
