  1. I just got a letter from Penn state and they say I need to prove I had the MMR vaccine. I know I got it years ago but I will never be able to get those records(switched providers many times, doctors retired, lost files). They say I can just have my current doctor give me the shot and I will be fine. Well I wanted to know if anyone else got it and what the price range is. I have no health insurance so this is all out of pocket.
    I hope its under 50.00

  2. I can check when I get home. I had to have it in 2002 when I got my EMT license, and it was out-of-pocket as well.

I'll let you know in a couple of hours...

Don't know where you're at, but I would suggest checking local clinics. Anything medical, and you better add another zero to what you hope it will cost. When I lost my insurance last year, I had the choice to keep coverage under COBRA (not the one here!) for just my infant daughter at $400.00 a month or pay the $350.00 for the vaccinations she currently needed. Where we live now, there is a clinic for people without insurance that only charges $45 for the same shots!

  4. My local doctor is pretty cheap. He only charged me 25 or 35 for my physical needed to get my drivers license and all the other local doctors were charging 60-95 for a physical. So I hope he is pretty reasonable for the shots. I like my current doctor, hes my 2 fav things, cheap and a nice guy(thats rare for doctors LOL).

    no charge here

but if you had it already -- you will have developed antibodies and getting another one might put you in anaphylactic shock or something

not sure -- worth asking ...

I checked on a risk for reaction, none. Thank god. Thats all I need with no insurance, a trip to the ER. I can already hear the cash register *ching ching*.

Wow! You pay a lot there. They're about $25 here (cost before insurance if it's done during an office visit). Our insurance pays 100% of any and all immunizations for kids and adults. Just had to go through with the whole slew of them (polio, diphtheria, tetanus, typhoid, hepatitis A and B) for the trip to the middle east this past winter.

My wife works for a health insurance company. She says it's pretty cheap anyway, but suggested you get some sort of a COBRA plan. Until you do, you better lock yourself inside a self contained sterilization bubble and hope you don't have a trip to the ER soon.

I've had water in Mexico without getting a parasite, but I wouldn't recommend it. The water tastes funny as it is. I would still suggest getting shots, because it's something you really don't want to risk. Also, if you're going somewhere due to work, school, or because of some touring companies, they require you to have shots like that if you're going to join with them. It's reason is more for their insurance purposes, that way you can't sue them. Schools in the US require certain immunizations or proof of records to make sure they don't have a breakout amongst the students especially when they are in such close quarters with each other.

MMR is free here, but apparently turns your child's brain inside out. Governement tells us it's perfectly safe to use the combined vaccine, then the PM has his children secretly given three seperate vaccines.

Yeah Tony, really got us convinced that did.

    But it IS free.

it is true that more kids get sick and even die from the vaccine each year than ones who get the real thing over the last 10 years ...

but without it -- you are not allowed to go to school -- except on moral grounds you can sometimes get an exemption

You got big ballz. Shit like polio, which while still exists in the US,is much less prevelent. This kinda thing is all over the third world. I get all my shots and then some. The risk for reaction is slim. I've been lax on eating in Mexico and SE Asia and never got traveler's squirts. I would gamble on 24-48 hours on the can. Who wants to end up like FDR?

You don't have to. Most people get the screaming shits from showering* - you obviously can't shower with bottles of Baraka I was very careful not to drink tap water, eat raw fruit or vegetables, and only ate cooked food. I still was popping the Cipro on the fourth day.

    * - Try showering without getting even a drop of water in your mouth. Unless you skip everything above the shoulders, it almost can't be done if you continue to breathe.

Apparently you have a high resistance to the bacteria that causes traveler's diarrhea.

Then the travel medicine doc was drumming up more business because I had all the shots as a kid and he still suggested I get the booster.

The insurance paid every penny so I didn't care. He said I needed all those shots, so I got all the shots. It was a hassle going to him 3 times (2 return visits for the hepatitis A & B follow-up shots), but I didn't want to come down with some strange bug over there.

They've got a nasty little creature in the fresh water there that causes schistosomiasis. It starts its life in snails, then when mature, the cercaria leave the snail into the water and search for a host. It burrows through your skin if you even walk on the water's edge, and takes up residence in either your liver or your bladder depending on the strain. Then it lays eggs .......

Definitely to be avoided. The symptoms take weeks to show up. Fortunately there's a medication that you take for one day, and it nukes the little buggers - causes their cells to lose cohesion. But by then the damage may already be done. One of the more unpleasant long-term effects of that thing is a greatly increased likelihood of developing bladder cancer (for the one that lives there).

They've tried molluskicide in the areas of cities, and have reduced the chance of getting it, but they can't completely remove it. Best to just stay away from lakes and rivers Salt water is safe though.

One parasite I thought was interesting, disgusting but interesting, is a worm found in Africa (aren't they all ) - the female lives in the blood vessels of the lower extremities. They grow to be several feet long. The only way to get rid of them is to stand in the water, triggering the female to poke her head out of the skin, and clamp the head between two sticks. Then you have to roll the sticks about 2cm per day, until it's all the way out. Go faster and it breaks and just grows back. There is no known medication to kill it. I forget the name of it, but I'm sure it can be researched on CDC or another similar site. It's fascinating reading about these germs and parasites that can kill you in some areas of the world. I'm glad I live here

As for the hep a vaccination, I got this as soon as I could. Spoke with an Infectious Disease(who in my profession opinion didn't know shit) specialist who stated he didnt recommend it for Cent America and especially for the US. The following month 300 people in my area contracted it from a restaurant in a nice suburb. My friend and his dad got this at the same time without eating at this establishment. His dad almost died. So I like to over self immunize. Id get a smallpox booster but I have a contraindication.
