I need help. I know a lot of you captured Reagan's funeral. So did I, plus a lot of the other ceremonies that took place. But the hard drive may have crashed.

What I need is the news footage of Mikhail Gorbachev standing in front of Reagan's casket. If you could post here, that would be great. I'd also like an e-mail of the screenshot if you could provide one as well.

    Thanks.

Nice subject line, I did wonder when I saw you as the poster

    Why Gorbachev in particular ?

Buddha says that, while he may show you the way, only you can truly save yourself, proving once and for all that he's a lazy, fat bastard.

I have a lot of respect for Gorbachev. He really tried to change things, even though he was pretty much up against a brick wall with a gun to his head. He was a realist, unlike most of his political brethren.

I think highly of a man who would personally pay respects to his former adversary. Even being on the losing end, he continues to take his downfall in style. And I appreciate him for that.

    Unlike Mr. Chirac...

Not to get political or anything, but most RUSSIANS respect Gorbachev a lot less than Americans do.

I'm sorry 888888, I don't understand your avatar. Could you please clarify which side is up?

You are correct about the Russians. But since they've been socially raped for the last few hundred years (methinks since Catherine?) do they know any better. I doubt it.

How about maybe Ivan the Terrible, or before that the Mongol hordes, or maybe the vicious Barbarian tribes of the dark ages.

Not a happy history... but which is? America's probably comes closest but we have still managed to have some big blunders in a matter of a wee 225 years.

I have that short-lived commerical on VHS somewhere with Gorby walking down a snow covered street while eating a slice of PH pizza(Tverskaya possibly? I ate at the PH there once back in '93).

Note: Commerical not shown in Russia/Ukraine for obvious reasons, but I made a copy and sent it to in-laws over there. They got a real hoot out of it and showed it to everyone they knew. Rumor has it Gorby & Raisa's popularity dropped another 150 points after that ~ is it possible to have approval numbers in the -2500 range?

How do you think they felt about Gorbachev, say, four years into Yeltsin's presidency?

I'll bet Gorby wasn't lookin' too bad then.

Not really, from the people I've talked to over there. They still blame Mishka for most of their problems, because he was the one that opened the floodgates of capitalism. Yeltsin just presided over the "ash heap" (sorry for the overused metaphor) that was left.

Granted, that may not be the opinion of every Russian/Ukrainian, but it seems to be the overwhelming opinion of all that I've ever asked about it. We have a different viewpoint of him over here, that he helped end the cold war, although one way or another it would have ended anyway, since we apparently bankrupted the FSU.

My wife can't understand the "admiration" that Americans have for Gorby, since as far as Russians are concerned he's the Devil himself. I told her about that time that Misha and Raisa were in the USA for some kind of summit meeting (I don't remember exactly where, but it was during the late 80's when there were still negotiations regarding nuclear arms reductions talks), and their limo was greeted in the streets here (maybe Washington?) with Americans waving Soviet flags and chanting something like "We love you, Gorby" (maybe not their exact words, but similar). He (Gorby) had the driver stop the limo and he and Raisa got out and shook hands and signed autographs (IIRC) like some kind of rock star.

This was never reported on Soviet TV, of course. Just like the Pizza Hut commercial, it was never meant to be seen over there. But because he was well liked over here, the fascination continues. I, too, was struck by his coming to pay respects to Reagan. I was wondering what must have been going through his mind at that moment. Maybe "Well, Ronnie, you won the cold war, but I'm still here..." A lot of memories, I suppose. Even my wife was surprised that he came to pay respects.

We might get a chance to meet Gorby sometime, he speaks at the Milken Institute out here in Santa Monica periodically, which we are members of: (don't ask how/why ), but we were able to meet Nikita Mihailkov (well known Russian actor, "Burnt by the Sun", "Barber of Siberia") at the Milken Institute. Since the Institute is quite a ways from where we live, we have only gone a couple of times, but it's a good place to meet/schmooze with politicians and leaders.

In any case, I told my wife that I believe history will judge him less harshly, at least Russian history. If things get better for the average Russian, then certainly they will come to view him in a more positive light. However, if things continue to deteriorate, then I expect him to be villified forever in Russian history textbooks as the person that destroyed their country. Too bad, because I think he did the best he could with a bad situation. I doubt anyone else in that position could have done any better than what he did, there weren't many options available to him.

Hopefully, he'll get a little recognition in his lifetime for his achivements, if not, at least a decent sendoff when he's gone, though there won't be nearly the pomp and circumstance that Reagan got.

  13. I could see a funeral for him like the Cardinal of the Kremlin got. Buried on US soil with a Soviet flag on his coffin. It would be fitting that he be buried by the nation he once swore to destroy.

Agreed, it would be a good idea to bury him here. I think he is a U.S. resident anyway (not sure, but he seems to be here an awful lot, and has some kind of foundation here at Northeastern U. - http://www.gfna.net/index.php ), and he would get a lot more respect here.

I can't see them burying him outside the Kremlin wall with the others, people would probably spit on his grave (or piss on it, if they're a mind to).

I think it would be nice for him to buried in the US, but remember the fiasco about his heart surgery and they wouldn't let him be operated on in the US or by US surgeons. You'll have to wait a few generations before people that have grown up under influence before Gorby's reign are gone and the country is able to look back at what really happened in the efforts to open up the Soviet Union and end the Cold War. I'm sure that when he came into office he was under the same brainwash as 98% of the russians were. Once in power and having received an understanding of what other cultures really view the Soviet Union as, as well as how other countries deal with regulated freedoms, he wanted to show his country what they've been blinded from. Just like people today that are in their 70's and 80's, they are used to the old structure and aren't willing to accept change. They also don't like a leader who at first condemned a certain country and then later advocate it while calling his own countries governing system uncivilized. I highly doubt the country enjoyed being insulted by their own leader.

But the younger generations are starting to realize this and they are working on their system as time passes. I think it'll get better and Russia will actually look at Gorby as key to their modern successfulness.
