Ok, I'm hoping someone can help me here. I built a new computer for this guy at work and installed XP Pro on it, along with many other goodies. In order to keep the system up to date, I used my LAN line (cable modem) to get all the Windows XP updates. Everything has worked fine, until I tried to use his own ISP to connect to the internet via a 56k modem. This guy will be using Juno dial-up to connect to the internet. Here is the problem: I can actually dial and logon to Juno, but I cant get on the internet or check his mail! Its driving me crazy! I've tried deleting all the temporary internet files, cookies, and history, but that didn’t work. I even uninstalled IE and reinstalled, that didn’t work. I then rolled-back the computer (XP feature)...that didn’t work! I always receive the dreaded "Page Cannot Be Displayed" message when trying to visit any websites. I also tried various different access numbers to dial into Juno. Can anyone help??? Thanks!

  2. can you open anything else besides juno.com?? Like yahoo.com or google.com? If you can Juno is jacked not the 56K modem and setup. Unless your using outlook express and then yes you'd have to set that up for juno.

No, I cannot open yahoo.com or google.com and I pretty sure Juno is not jacked because I tried using XP dial up with another service provider and it didnt work either. Sucks.

First thing i would try is : start run cmd
then at the prompt type this: ipconfig /flushdns

If that doesn't work try reading this KB article...

  5. You might try messing around in Tools>Internet Options in the Connections tab.

I've seem this many times in the past it usually ( though not always ) has to do with the tcp/ip stack getting corrupted and/or winsock. The article I posted a link to has the supposed fix for that for xp though no guarntees. Another possible is you have some spyware messing with you. After trying my other post I'd next try running adaware and spybot s&d. Both free downloads. Be sure to update both if possible. You say you can connect just not surf so if you can download them elsewhere and put them on your computer you MAY be able to update them by connecting to juno ( whether you can surf or not! ). If you are remove only the stuff in RED on spybot. And also don't worry to much of DSO exploit it is something no longer a problem as long as your computer software is up to date.

Wow, thanks for the help. I sure wish I would have checked this post earlier. I got so impatient I just formatted the drive and reinstalled XP (I know, throwing the baby out with the bath water) but now I can connect. I used Juno exclusivly to get all the Windows updates. Took 11 hours! Ouch! Thanks again though, I will keep that in mind!

Try here for a free windows CD, It took 3-4 weeks before I got it but it comes with most of the Updates and some free firewall, it's a genereic Zonealarm, but it's free http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp
