  1. What I want to know is this....

Can you convert a VHS tape to an MPEG2 file (on the HD) on a set-top DVD-Recorder and then take that MPEG2 file and put in on your computer and author and burn it yourself?

I just want to know because I want to create files that are already VBR encoded (so I know they fit on DVD) but I don't want to have to use the set-top DVD-Recorder's authoring/menus/chapters...

    Yes.
I own a Philips recorder. I record with (+)RW discs then add chapter markers and better looking menus with either TMPGEnc DVD Author or Ulead Movie Factory 2.0 depending on my mood that day..

As far as REAL editing goes....your better off doing that in the recorder. Much easier that way. You can do that by dividing the title or adding chapter markers in the DVD Recorder(in a Philips recorder anyway).

Most DVD Recorders WILL NOT record factory made VHS tapes(like movies and concert video) due to the built in copy protection on the tapes.
You will need to circumvent that.

  3. Oh ok, I see, you take the video off of the DVD-RW and put it on ur PC...then create your own menus...

    Thanks for the info!
