  1. I've been trying to rip Phone Booth for a couple days now, but I've run into something that's never happened before. First of all, I've viewed the DVD fine on my player, in my PS2 and on my computer, and it's obviously dual layered--very fancy menus.

However, when I load the DVD into DVD Decryptor or DVD Shrink, it only reads a single layer. When I reproduce this single layer, the DVDR reads "This DVD cannot be viewed in this region"--even though I just viewed the DVD on my computer. It seems like there must be some kind of hidden layer or something.

Is this some kind of copyright protection? Is there any way around this, or should I just give up all hope?

  2. is your drive region protected.
get dvd region killer(older, but still works a charm),or an equivelant, and try playing the dvd for a few seconds,in power dvd or anther software player with the region killer running in the background.
then rip the film with dvd decrypter.
you also could try,"movie only" in dvd decrypter, then pass it through, say DVD2ONE,then burning with your favorite software, that should sove your problems.
you could also rip "all files",if you want to keep everything.

and when you say,"reproduce",do you mean ,your not compressing it to fit on a dvd-r,just copying the files that its ripped.
dvd decrypter is on version 3.2.2.0 now,i think, try updating it too.

Well, that's where it get's sticky...

The DVD plays fine on my computer, I can view it. It appears to be dual layered, there's extras and the menus are flashy. But when its read by DVD Decryptor or DVD Shrink, they can only read a single layer, and they say that it's region isn't compatible.

  4. Rent or borrow a friends copy to rule out disc damage. Try to rip the disc on another PC or laptop to rule out the drive/software. I've had some crazy crap happen while ripping on each of my drives. Trying different brands and/or different software does the trick every time (unless someone damaged the disc).

    Best of Luck,

I'm sorry, but it is a new type of copy protection.

Newbie?! He's up to 2 posts already.

Is it possible that your DVD reader is going out?

I know that Phone Booth is DL, but flashy menus + extras does not always equal dual layer, just so you know.

Are you sure that the DVD is 'Dual Layer', and not 'Double Sided'? In a double sided DVD, you need to turn the disc over, to watch the rest of the movie. In a double layer disc, you don't have to change sides of the disc. Do you think its a possibility that it is reading only one 'side', and you need to turn the disc over to read the other 'side'?

How are you "reproducing" it ? Are you burning the output of shrink to a DVD ? What program are you using to burn ?
    If in doubt, Google it.
