  1. When I play an Xvid file I can see via gspot that its not the xvid codec that decompresses and plays it but instead the InterVideo MPEG4 Video Decoder. I would like my sytem to play xvid codecs with the xvid codec I have installed and not choose the intervideo one. My question is how do I dictate which codec should play which type of file?

All I can thinkof is to remove all the codecs that you don't want and then only install the ones that you need.

You can change the priorities assigned to each codec.

    Don't remember how ...

Remove the unwanted codec is the obvious answer (but is it unique to that player only?)

What media player do you use (if you say WMP8/9 I'll personally come round there and poke you in the eye)?

If you use FFDshow you can turn off its support for xvids to allow another codec to be used (useful).

If you use Zoomplayer (if you dont you should..... imo) you can change priorities for codecs etc in the Register Filter Manager....i dont know if editing from within Zoomplayer effects all decoding on all direct show players but my best 'guess' is it definetly will...............or wont.

Anyway its how I fixed the XVID 1.00RC4 stuttering playback...just set ZP to use the latest XVID codec...and disabled FFDShow from decoding XVIDs.

  5. I can't get rid of the codec I think its used when decoding DVD. I'm not using WMP8 so shall have my eyesight for a little longer (though a few more lonely nights without my gf and who knows). I use bsplayer (the old pre 1.0 version) If I was using ffdshow then I would be having a hit on its codec not the intervideo one so would still have my original problem where by the xvid codec is not decoding xvid coded video.
Your last suggestion sounds most promising and I'll give zoomplayer a go and see if it can do the job.
    Thanks.

    Try VCSwap v1.5 .

It is a tool for Hot Swapping Video Codecs. You can, while you are editing your video's, swap between the different codecs instead of uninstalling / installing them!

    Features :
    Hot Swapping Video Codecs
    Scan Codecs for additional FOURCC's
Enabling and Disabling installed Codecs on the fly
    Showing of Installed DirectShow filters

    Work you bloody thing....
