I remember back in the day when you wanted a shared directory password protected it was just part of the sharing menu. Now with XP I know that you have to set a user in the Users and Groups in the system tools, but how do I set permissions so that when a user connects to the host computer it asks them for their username/password before heading to the root directory listed in the user's properties? I want to share out my website files so that I can make changes to them from any of the computers in my house so that they all stay unified. I also wanted to map a drive on my laptop for that same shared directory.

  2. OK working from memory here - so take it with a grain of salt!

As long as the host requires users to use a password, persons connecting remotely will have to as well, but usually you take care of this in the netuse statement that connects - or if the remote user is a "user" on the host computer, using the same password, they will get automatic access.

The netuse statement will also log the required directory as a drive for the remote user.

    IE

    net use v: \\192.168.0.4\C:\hold /persistent:no

will connect the remote user (whom is a registered user on the host, using the same password on the remote computer) to the host 192.168.0.4, seeing the Host C:\hold as V:

If they are not a registered user on the Host, they will be prompted for login and password

I have the user added on the host computer in the system tools and that user is part of the Users group. I have set a password and a local directory for it on the host computer which is where the shares are located. Now do I simply share that folder on the network just like any other non-protected share or do I have to map something directly to it from the client computer?

  4. In Tool>Folder Options do you have Simple Filesharing enabled or disabled?

No, figured that out last night. Opened up a whole ton of options in the sharing menu so I think I've figured out how to do it. Still not as simple as 98SE had it but I guess it will actually work better this way.

Probably not as simple as 98se, but I gather it is inherently more secure...
