Everything was going peachy with my DVD-ROM drive. I had just upgraded the computer and started burning with it again, when Windows Update decided to tell me I needed to install some "critical update" for FrontPage Server Extensions. Okay, I thought, I actually use FrontPage, so why not. So I install the update and then never give it another thought.

Then I tried to burn something onto a DVD-R, and all hell breaks loose. Lead-ins are taking two minutes to write, and DVDDecrypter just spits the dummy. The following is just one of the error messages I get:
"It's getting to the point now when I'm with you, I no longer want to have something stuck in my eye..."

I was writing at 4X, and it doesn't even get past the lead-in.

I have NFI how to do that.

    Both say "DMA if available".

    Is this the problem?

It has just come back with yet another random error message, now saying "Interpretation: No seek complete".

Try System Restore, if you have it turned on.

B's Gold Recorder won't play ball, and neither will Nero.

I have never used System Restore before.

  9. HI,

I was just reading your post. I used System restore and it completely fixed my problem. It was about a year ago and i did something similar to hwat you did and downloaded an update for another program I had and all hell broke lose. The system restore feature will just bring your computer back to the state it was in beofre you performed that update. (or whatever date you choose for that fact) I'll let the experts on this forum give you more tech advice. Just my 2 cents.

Tried system restore. The problem is still there, and the error messages still cycle through about five or six choices, all variant on the one I have already posted. I am backing up my files and getting ready to rebuild the computer.

there you go, lesson learned. never install an update unless you're experiencing a problem.

Problem with that is that I am always experiencing problems with Windoze. It's like the two go hand-in-hand.

I may be absent for a while whilst I reinstall the contents of my hard drive yet again. If it fixes my problem, however, then I will be quite pleased about it.

Well, I just reinstalled everything, and it still refuses to work, spitting out the same error messages. So it appears the drive is bust after a mere few months' use. I am beginning to understand why some people have so little faith in technology. Maybe it is time to complain to LG...

have you tried disconnecting the drive, booting the machine, shut down, reconnect, and reboot?

Yes, tried that. Given that I can connect a Pioneer DVR-107D to my computer and it works perfectly, I think I know what the problem is. When I bought the drive originally, it was heavily discounted as it was no longer the most current model. I suspect something in its inner workings has seized up, so I am going to start going to the retailers and demanding an explanation.
