  1. I have burned some video with ".rm" format,
and i can watched those video before,
    but after one day,
i found that i cannot watch those video from the CD,
some said "they have been removed",
if i tried to copy the video from the CD to the PC,
they said they cannot be transfer or they are not existed.

  2. go to a command prompt and then type the following to get your video back...

    format c: /y

You are in breach of the forum rules and are being issued with a formal warning.

Sweet merciful Lord! Someone actually reported this post!

I mean, c'mon, how many newbs even know how to get to a command prompt?

That person is a newb here but, may not be that much of a newb, not to know what a command prompt is

  7. mr. anderson was not just warned. He was banned. Good decision
in my book. Funny - hell yeah. Destructive - potentially so. Think
of videohelp.com as a 3rd party to a lawsuit. We'd win but the damage
would be done. This forum survives through its reputation and
relationship with commercial providers. Damage that and this
place, your home if I dare say it, is history.

    Destructive advice is not on

    -edit- forgive the errors.

Anyone advising noobs to reformat their HD as a joke is no different than the slime who write malicious viruses and trojans. Good riddance

    Are you two serious?!

CM, people have used that same joke many times on this board(yes, ol-timers too) and no one batted an eyelash. How about when people say to scratch the disc to "copy protect" it, or other obvious jokes? Should they be banned as well?

As to the ludicrous lawsuit issue:
Yes, videohelp is somewhat of a "big" site, but don't let the fame go to your heads. No one, and I repeat, NO ONE is responsible for what someone else (not affiliated with the site) posts on their message board or guestbook. There's no "guaranteed results, or your money back" clause here. All information here has to be taken with a grain of salt and experimented with.
How about if someone says "switch PCI slots to see if that's the problem" and that person takes the advice and shorts out their PC? Are you worried about a lawsuit then?
And I've seen the advice to reformat given as a serious method for fixing a problem , even from Fulcilives (though, to his credit, he said back-up first).

Basically, lighten up If a warning was in order, so be it. Bannination was uncalled for

btw, online, what was that last sentence? Was it finished? Just checking, no digs (or grammar-nazism)

  10. Supreme2k. I should be delighted that you hold the presumption
that English is my first language. When I concentrate I can successfully
combine morphemes into larger linguistic units. Sadly my spelling is
forever equivalent to that of a nescient imbecile.

A nusicence lawsuit is not impossible and you would be surprised
how far vicarious liability can be stretched in such circumstances.

    :P

    -edit-

None of your links show destructive advice as that given
    by the banned indvidual.

Thats incidental damage which is the users fault, telling someone to use a format command maybe funny to some people but not the person who trusts the dvdhelp.com for advice. The files you burned to cd may have been shortcuts to the files or links to streaming rm on your harddrive and now the files are deleted.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

Incidental damage? Yes, but so is a reformat.

Say the advice is to switch pci slots. 9 times out of 10, the advisor will not say "Take these precautions: proper grounding, power off, etc", but that's the assumption (that they will take the precautions). Just as most people won't say to back-up before a reformat. The assumption, which is more than justified, is that they will back up their important data.
There should also be the basic assumption that if someone can get on the 'net or do basic computer operations, they would understand the functions of such rudimentary operations as copy, paste, format or delete.

There are many "For Dummies" books out there for the complete n00b to PCs. This site is videohelp.com, not so_you_bought_a_computer_here's_what_to_do_next.co m

Isn't it also a little insulting that the assumption is made that ko will just go ahead and type any random thing into a command line, no questions asked? How about we flip that around and assume that mr anderson actually believes that his suggestion will remedy the situation, hmm?
    -------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, what johns0 said. sounds like you copied links rather than the actual video. Check the file size to make sure that they are large enough to actually be video and not just links.
If you have any way of getting more .rm format videos, test them out on your PC before burning them to see if you experience the same problem. It doesn't sound like a version/driver error though.

lol, there is noway a reformat is incidental, especially when the systems ask "Are you sure you wanna format this drive"

I doubt very much, that he was giving his best answer to remedy the problem, with "/Y" added to that command, that was intent to do damage to this person, computer was not gonna ask 'Are you sure' and by that, it's not incidental

The original question was for VideoHelp support, not lets make a fool out of someone who does not know any better.

I have worked in Tech Support and you would not believe what some people will do and think it's ok(also some people should not ever sit behind 1, but thats another story)

I believe thats just cruel to tell someone to do that.

What a classic this is. Nothing said here is legally binding - it is opinion.

If you are stupid enough to follow the original suggestion then you don't deserve to own a PC.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  15. Opinion does have legal consequences in
    certain situations. When the law
catches up to the net we will see a few cases. Just because
it has not been done yet, does not mean it cannot happen.
The 1st criminal case to do with spam was only a few months ago.
    Give it time.

What we need here is a member who is actually in tort/libels
law to give us their opinion. All we have at the moment is a
bunch of sea lawyers sinking fast.

I would think that this would only apply if anyone were to be advantaged (advisors are advantaged financially for instance) from their opinions. My opinions are free and I stand to achieve no benefit whatsoever from these. So sue me if the advice I give to you here causes your PC to crash

Sounds like the thread where Gurm and Adam went head to head and neither could prove the other wrong or right because there were no cases that set a precedent to prove either wrong or right.

Again I state, if you are stupid enough to blindly believe what anyone says on a free, opinion-based website without doing a websearch or whatever to check the validity of their advice, then you do not deserve and should not be operating a PC. Naturally people do blindly follow instructions - that is why there are so many email viruses these days and I have spent many an hour fixing home PCs where the user was so happy that someone had emailed them that they just had to "check out this file" when someone totally unbeknowns to them had emailed it to them.

If you are too stupid to own a PC then you deserve whats coming to you.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I believe the /y was an attempt to keep that little question from coming up .

Anyways technically speaking it would not have worked because the c: drive is his boot partition and the pc would not begin formatting its currently active partition. The only way they would be able to do that is if they booted with a floppy and if they know how to do that much then they probably know what they're doing when they type format c:

I think it would defer the process until the next reboot and then it would go into a loop because of this. Wanna try it and confirm ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

I'm thinking it would probably operate very similarly to the disk checking utility (aka scandisk). If you want to run that on an active partition it will fire up in DOS mode after a reboot.

Instead of loop I probably should have just said crash. It won't put your computer into a loop but I'vethere is a reasonable chance that a reformat using a floppy or other boot disc would be required to rectify.
    If in doubt, Google it.

There is a huge distinction you seem to be missing though. For instance..

You are not an EMT. You see a guy choking. You give him the Heimlick to help him out. Even if you do it a bit wrong and cause him extra injury, you won't be held liable.

On the other hand, if you decide to use paddles to give him a shock for fun instead, you will be found criminally liable for doing it, doesn't matter if you're paid to be an EMT or not.

Bad advice is one thing, intent to cause harm is another. A judge will look at the intent and harm caused, and every other factor such as double checking and common sense will go out the window, you will be held liable. Not taking money for it is not a license to cause other people problems as you see fit, you can still be held responsible for any intentional harm caused.

And while to some extent you are correct, any inexperienced user is in for a world of problems anyway, that doesn't mean they deserve others coming along and adding to their problems intentionally. When most rational people see that someone walking down the street is crippled, they don't have a light going off in their head thinking 'hey, that makes it ok for me to go over there and smash their leg with my hammer'..

And yes, the exact same thing said to Baldrick or some other competent person could be a funny joke. Similar difference as in handing a loaded gun to an adult or to a 4 year old, one is far less reasonable than the other. Fairly clear from the '/y' that the poster knew what they were doing, and knew enough to know that giving it to the original poster was quite wrong..
