Hey guys I am new to this forum as well as DVD ripping and I am at my wits end SOOOOOOOOOOO I'm hoping someone, anyone can help me. Lordsmurf has been good enough to answer a few of my questions but I'm stuck at a certain point.

Ok so I want to rip and copy my first dvd. I bought dvd x platinum, a hacked version and guess what it didn't work. So I surfed some more before I found this site. Thanks to Lordsmurf as well as this forum I downloaded: DvD Shrink, DvD decrypter and Img Tools from this site. I also went and downloaded a trial version of Nero 6.

Basically I muddled my way through decrypter, dvd shrink and img tools. I got all the way to the final step "create and burn image" and it was working until it hit 21% at which time it stopped, the screen was on and the time was counting but the bars all stopped. I waited over 20 minutes and nothing happened. I attempted to cancel and nothing so I rebooted. I checked my dvd and it said it was full, the 4.65 GB size of the movie so I'm thinking maybe just maybe it worked. I previewed the movie and it worked, menus and extras, at least the first couple chapters. I went in and selected a chapter at the end and of course it didn't work, which I expected.

I consulted with my guide again and was lost so I checked the directory where I saved files and thought that because I had all the files, .iso_00 file, .iso_01 file, .iso_02 file, .iso_03 file, .iso_04 file and a .lst file that maybe i could just burn these to a dvd like i do other data files using roxio cd & dvd creator - wrong. the files burned but when i tried the dvd it just hung up my system until i removed the disc.

So here I sit completely lost. I've spent almost 2 days on this ruined two DvDs and I'm really depressed. Can anyone please help me?

Some background: I am following the DVD shrink guide at http://www.dvdr-digest.com/articles/23_1.html; I am using Win ME; I have dvd encrypter, dvd shrink, img tools and trial version of nero installed; I have a dir with my decrypted movie also dvd shrunk that is comprised of 2 subfolders entitled "AUDIO_TS" and "VIDEO_TS" which is 4.35 GB; in addition I have a dir which I used to run img tools burn to burn my dvd from my hard disk to a blank dvd+r which has the files above (.iso_00 file, .iso_01 file, .iso_02 file, .iso_03 file, .iso_04 file and a .lst file) a total size of 4.36 GB.

I was reading the dvd shrink guide and it stated the following: The .IMG image file produced will most likely be larger than 4 GB in size. Windows 98/Me have problems with single files of larger than 4 GB, and so, it is essential that you do this step under an operating system capable of handling large files (Windows 2000/XP). You can by-pass this problem by burning the 'disc1' and 'disc2' directories without making an image file, eg. by using the "DVD" recording profile under Nero Burning ROM (instructions are not provided here, but it is very straight foward for anyone who has used Nero prior).

Could this be my problem since I'm using Win ME and if so how do I do this? I tried to look at nero and could not find anything about "DVD recording profile under Nero Burning ROM" so I chose to quit and come here.

Sorry for the length of this post I am just trying to provide as many facts as possible in the hopes someone who has expertise in copying dvd's can help me.

my email is wmb72@adelphia.net and i would appreciate any help.

  4. Okay, the first piece of advice would be using DVD RW for testing.

    Try this way:

    1. Rip the DVD to hard drive using DVD Decrypter in File Mode (press F). Select all files before ripping (Ctrl+A).

    2. In DVD Shrink, click Open Files and select the folder with the ripped files. Ensure that Full Disc button is selected. Click Backup to compress the files into a new folder.

    3. Open Nero - New compilation (Ctrl+N), change CD to DVD in the drop-down box in the top left corner. Select DVD-Video in the list on the left. Click New. It will create an empty compilation with AUDIO_TS and red VIDEO_TS folders.

    4. Drag-and-drop all the files created by DVD Shrink into the red VIDEO_TS folder. Ensure that your burner is selected on the main toolbar. Burn.

dimmer thanks i'll try this tomorrow i'm wasted now. the only bad thing is i have to repeat the whole process again from ripping on down? yuck, was hoping i could just pick up where i left off at another stage. also, i used a dvd+r/w with the idea of testing my burn the problem is i used the wrong type of burn under roxio easy cd/dvd creator.

think i could burn those .iso files that i listed and that .lst file using nero as you suggested or do i have to reapeat the entire process yet again?

    thanks for the help.

Since you use WinME, you're not going to have much success with ISO files because of the 4Gb file size limit. I suggest you start from scratch and do it properly this time. It should take too long to rip a disc. What's an extra half an hour after all you've been through!

  7. masterblaster,

follow dimmers steps and you should ok, to give a better idea of how to rip using DVD Decrypter follow this simulated guide
    http://www.dvdshrink.info/dvd-decrypter.php

to shrink your DVD follow this simulated guide, but as dimmer stated click open files instead of open disc - the rest of the steps are the same.
    http://www.dvdshrink.info/fulldisk_basic.php

If your going to burn using nero then follow this simulated guide, its what dimmer is trying to explain to you.
    http://www.dvdshrink.info/nero-video.php

    hope it helps

  8. Thanks guys. Ok I wondered if my using Win ME wasn't a problem, ugh. It seems like a lot of these things dislike ME my problem is I hate to spend the $$$ to get XP especially a full from scratch version.

One more dumb question. I'm using the trial version of Nero 6, I'm assuming this will run out and I'll have to pay for the full version yes?
    Quote Quote
  9. Not a dumb question. Yes you will have to purchase Nero, but you
might be able to get a cheaper copy on ebay or a 2nd hand earlier
    version.

It is a minefield. Nobody here was born with knowledge, we all
had to learn it. Some forget that.

  14. Well guys I'm close to destroying something here...a whole day later, I followed everyone's suggestions and yet I cannot get nero to successfully burn to dvd. I tried a dvd+r and two different dvd+r/w and everytime the burn fails.

I thought maybe it was my burner so I tested it by burning some data files under roxio the way I have been doing for months and it worked. This is just insane already, I'm at the end of my rope on this stuff.

I am posting two different error logs that Nero gave me. Maybe someone will understand what they are supposedly reporting. I know one thing, it's not normal for your dvd to open and close four to five times before and during a burn, or is it?

    Here is error log 1:

  15. It appears that Nero concludes the PC is too slow to write at 4x speed and attempts to write DVD+RW at 2x speed, while the minimum for +RW is 2.4x. You should disable the Determine Maximum Speed option in the Burn window. Check that HDD has DMA enabled. Also, try using a 2.4x DVD+RW if you have one.

Maybe whatever other burning software you have can write a DVD-Video compilation.

  16. Did you say Roxio ?

Roxio and Nero will not cohabitate. You will be getting all sorts
of weird and wonderful errors. You have to remove both, reboot
and install just one of them. I suggest Nero.

Really? That's pretty crappy but it makes sense I just hope it's something that simple. I will uninstall them both then reinstall the trial version of Nero and see what happens. I'm just going to try that another day, I've had enough problems the last couple days with this that I need a break.

Thanks again for the help and I'll be sure to post how I made out from this latest attempt.

Well I removed roxio and nero then reinstalled nero and tried again and no luck. The process got further such as completing the speed test but when it came time to actually do the burn it failed, for the third time.

Here is the latest error log it reported:

  19. I gave up on Nero and tried copy2dvd and after my first attempt it appears as if it worked. The test will be my standalone dvd players so if they work I'm set, finally.

UPDATE: the above worked on my computer's dvd burner but not my standalone dvd player/recorder. i thought i had finally done it when i saw the studio logo trailer play but then 14 seconds into it nothing else, the player was trying to read but it couldn't so i ejected. reinserted and it just picked up at 14 seconds with nothing. i got that disc out fast hoping not to wreck my standalone and here i sit, stuck again.

    i just love technology!

I decided not to keep Win ME when I recently started to burn DVD's.
WinME doesn't have the greatest reputation and you also have the file size problems with FAT32. If you take any classes, fulltime/partime/night, (or know someone who takes classes)
You could get (or ask a friend to get) an academic upgrade for Win Xp.

I got an academic WinXP Pro upgrade disk for $84 from an online site named newegg. The regular price is around $200. Yeah, $80 bucks is a fair amount of money, but I personally have had zero problems with Xp Pro and the capture/ripping/burning process had been pretty smooth (just hampered by my own lack of knowledge)

csaag thanks i'll be looking into XP soon simply because i've had enough problems with other software that didn't like ME I just haven't made the move yet because <1>$$ and <2>because I don't want to have to do a clean install i want to go over ME with XP and that is why I have been looking for a full version rather then an upgrade. I saw on the windows xp site that there is an upgradable xp version that works if you previously had ME so that is something else I'll look into.

I had the Win Xp Pro 'upgrade' disc and you can either install over ME or do a clean install.

AFAIK the only purporse of the 'upgrade ' disc was to give an incentive for people with a previous Windows disc to upgrade more cheaply.

You do need a disc with a previous version of Windows. Some systems come with 'recovery discs' with Windows already pre-installed. I'm not sure if the Xp Upgrade disc will accept that. If that's your case, thne check with Microsoft first before spending $$$. Microsoft also has an 'upgrade advisor' on their support website that checks your system for compatability

  24. Well you can close out this thread because I successfully burned and played my first dvd - finally. Thank you to everyone who helped with their suggestions it was appreciated greatly.

I'm not ready to disappear because I won't consider this a true success until I do a few movies but I got one under my belt so that's a start.

I'm also going to check out this forum to try and keep up and learn as many new things as I can. Great forum!

  25. masterblaster,

    Congrats!

Let us know what you did in the end to get it working.
Using ME is such a problem in general that the advice is often to
    forget it and upgrade.
