  1. I am hoping to buy some DVDs only available in PAL format and play them on a Philips that says it is PAL compatible for NTSC TVs (I know about anamorphic problems but these are very old films). The problem will arise if the region hack for my machine does not work and I don't find out until after the DVD buy. Will I be able to copy PAL discs with Shrink and change the region code? It seems as though I can but I don't assume anymore with this stuff.

    TIA
Still a few bugs in the system...

When you rip a DVD with DVD Decrypter you remove the region code. So it will be possible to make region free back-ups but they will still be PAL format.

So yes they will be region free but they won't play back on just any DVD player.

You have to have one that outputs PAL as NTSC.

Although it sounds like you do so there you go!
