Hi,
I have been playing around with extracting subtitles and came across some issues:
1) Video_TS folder not accepted for exctracting .srt subtitles
Here is what I did: In the filter tab I open a Video_TS folder.
Then I select the desired subtitle track (=ffmeg displayed the available subtitles by languges) and .srt. When I hit the Extract button, I get an error message saying that only unencrypted VOB files and Video_TS folder work for .srt extraction. Now since ffmeg shows the correct languages I assume there is a problem of the extraction program in detecting the video_ts folder. I created it using of DVDBackup X v1.3 removing encryption.
Since this did not work I tried the VOB files. There I came across the following issue:
2) Selecting certain subtitle tracks does not give any output although the preview shows them.
This movie in in english; sometimes a non-english language is being spoken. I wanted to extract only those subtitles (they are always shown, even when no subtitles are selected from the DVD menu). Using the preview function I found out which subtitle track number corresponds to what I wanted (in my case it was 11). But when extracting no subtitles are being found. If I choose the full-subtitle track (e.g. number 2), subtitles are extracted correctly.
3) OCR program cannot create file for storing OCR information
I think I saw this already in another thread. The file structure which the OCR tool wants to use is not OS X compatible. So neither the directory nor the dictionaty file (when the user is asked to recognice unrecognized chats) can be created. As a result the user has to enter the same character very often.
4) On some DVDs the subtitle extraction only creates images containing the white background shape of the subtitles, but not the black characters themselves. Therefore the OCR tool cannot recognice anything (even I had no clue what the subtitle was when I looked at such a file) and produces a .srt file stating "image" or something with this meaning at each timecode. The preview function however shows the correct subtitles.
This is what I found so far. I think ffmpegX is a very powerful tool.

You can't extract subtitles importing the whole VIDEO_TS folder. For some reason it gives that error even with the latest version posted today.
However if you load each VOB file and preview it until you find the subtitles you want to extract the programs works just fine.
As you choose the single VOB files you will not see the language but just the numbers 0 and so on. Play with Preview till you find the subtitle you want and press extract: it works.
Also in the Save number each VOB file so the program will not overwrite the previous files.
As for subtitles in general often the OCR program doesn't recognize words. Thius depends on the way subs were designed and printed on DVD. FOr some movies I had to virtually rewrite many lines.
If you face this problem remember to put a space atthe end of the words you correct : "house ", otherwise you will get mjessi titles with everyword attached one after the other. A good idea is to proof read the subs with Word or any other spelling utility, especially if you face many errors during the extraction.
Hope this helps, hi from Taiwan
