Mixed Memory Dimms

Hey all,

When I built my newest desktop I installed a DDR 2700 512M dimm

Now with older machines I remembered you could not mix 100 with 133 with 166 etc...

What issues are there with putting 2100, 2500, or other 'versions' of these new DDR's in WITH the 512 I already have?

Do these new chips denote speed 2100 vs 2500 vs 2700, etc?

Thanks... new to this new memory technology.

As far as I know the Mobo will default to the slowest clock speed of the memory.

Is there 2500 memory? I thought it was:
2100/266
2700/333
3200/400
and so on to OCing DIMMs.

As far as mixing them it is not recommended but most motherboards will just clock all of it down to the slowest memory in the machine. I think you just need to make sure you aren't mixing completely incompatable memory modules such as ECC or buffered on an unbuffered system, and obviously not SIMM/DIMM/RIMM.

Others have given you the correct answer.
However memory problems are not always obvious, and
sometimes cause random effects. In other words if I
was wearing your shoes I'd trade your current memory
in when buying a new lot. A little extra cash spent = peace of
mind rather than piece of mind. Got me ?

You might get away with it .... but then again ..... you might not. Don't be surprised if sometime down the road you have some strange errors that you can't put your finger on. I have .... and after replacing almost everything .... it turned out to be memory. I wouldn't mix memory on my main system if the data critical.
