Hi all,
I have a DVD-Audio I want to backup
Its Dual Layer and uses both VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders
Now I am guessing that if it were S/L I could just do a ISO read / ISO write in Decrypter. But being D/L in File mode Decrypter only decrypts the VIDEO_TS folder which contains some Video, DTS96/24 and PCM tracks. The hi-res lossless audio MLP96/24 track is in the AUDIO_TS folder.
Is there a way to decrypt the contents of this AUDIO_TS folder(which is about 3.5GB) and burn it to a DVDR and do the same with the VIDEO_TS folder on another DVDR, would these two discs work?
Or should I just wait for a D/L Writer and do ISO read / ISO write?
I have a feeling this may be the only way for a D/L DVD-Audio seen as there is not much video on them to compress.
Any suggestions?

Hi.
Alas programs like DVD decrypter, etc CANT decrypt the AUDIO_TS folder as it uses a diferent (and as yet unbroken) type of decryption to Video DVD's.
YOU CAN back-up the VIDEO-TS part of the DVD, ive done this with Metallica's Black DVD-Audio. This is because the VIDEO_TS part is designed to be played in normal DVD players and therefore I guess uses the original DVD decrption.
It has nothing to do with it being single or dual layer, if you tried making an ISO image of it , it would fail to play (as would un-decrypted DVD video) discs, this is because the decryption information is on a part of the disc that is uncopyable , uless you want to spend $1000s on 'Authoring DVD-R disks', the DVD-Rs that we all use on here are 'General DVD-R' disks. -
Ok, so at the moment we cant backup DVD-Audio discs (at least not the hi-res audio part).
Do you think they(being the authors of Decrypter etc.) are looking into cracking the encryption or is this an impossible task?
thanks for your reply -
It's not IMPOSSIBLE.
IIRC it's just using a different type of CSS-ish encryption (but don't quote me on that).
It's more of a "nobody has gotten around to it because it's only in the past year or so that there have been enough DVD-A discs available for anyone to care" sort of thing. -
Well..its because DVD-Video CSS was broken so easily that the makers of DVD-Audio really went to town with CSS2 to make it very hard to crack, in fact the release of DVD-Audio was delayed by a year or so just to do this, so while its not impossible that it will be broken I doubt it will happen anytime soon !
Im sure if you search the web you can find details of DVD-Audio encyption. -
Hi all.
Does anybody know if it's the copy protection that stops the hi-res audio from being "outputed" by the DVD player digital out?
Or is it hardware related? -
My DVD Audio player can 'output' the multi-chanel pcm audio on digital form, it goes into the digital connection on my amp !.
-
What's your dvd player, andydd?
As far as I know, only a handfull of set-tops will output the high-res audio (not AC3 or DTS) via a digital link, and they need to be connected to a compatible receiver (usually of the same brand). -
My player is a Panasonic DVD-Audio..cant remember the model but it the cheapest DVD Video/Audio player, my amp is an oldish Sherwood one.
I cant see any reason why using pure digital outputs/inputs wouldnt work for DVD-Audio, what would happen if you only had digital ins/outs as some high end equipment has . -

..for the simple reason its too late now !!..DVD players and DVD-video discs use CSS , you cant go changing discs now coz no player will play them !!

Gotta love that, right? It's one reason that the MPAA will put their money behind blu-ray. I guarantee it.
*sigh*

Some of the players/receivers that support hi-res multi-channel audio via a digital link:
- the Pioneer set-tops with "i" in their names:
http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/product_overview.jsp?category_id=222&taxonomy_id=62-84
"...and high-quality direct device-to-device digital audio transfers happen via the i.LINK Digital Audio Interface"
They would have to be used with the Pioneer receivers with also "i" in their names: http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/product_overview.jsp?category_id=405&taxonomy_id=62-98
"Digital-to-Digital transmission via i.link with PQLS" - proprietary link not compatible with other brands (as far as I know)
- the new Panasonic players and receivers (no support for SACD):
http://www.highfidelityreview.com/news/news.asp?newsnumber=18868399
Digital Audio via HDMI link - should be compatible with other HDMI equipped set-tops/receivers.
- Recent Denon models - DVD-5900 - AVR-5803 - AVR-3805.
http://www.usa.denon.com/catalog/products.asp?l=1&c=4
http://www.usa.denon.com/catalog/products.asp?l=1&c=2
Using "DENON Digital Link" - proprietary and not compatible with other brands.
This is why all multi-channel DVD-Audio/SACD players have 5.1 analog outputs. -
P.S: to answer my own question, it does look like it's a hardware issue and has nothing to do with copy-protection.
