I did a forum search on converting WMV files to something... ...usefull.

    Not a lot.
Just wondered if anybody knows of any spiffy new technique of turning a WMV into, say, something readily playable in QT.

    DEATH to asf!
    DEATH to rm!
    DEATH to wmv!

  2. I sure hope someone can point you (and me) to some app!

I've got a whole slew of .wm9 files that I can't do anything with. The Mac version of Windows Media Player won't play them. VLC plays the audio but not the video. QuickTime won't touch it. If ffmpegX can produce something usable from the files, I haven't figured out the correct settings yet, and I've tried most of 'em.

I haven't tried it, but it claims to do what you want. Its name is EasyWMA.

Hmm. I haven't come across WMV's that WMP wouldn't play, but i hate that thing.

In ffmpegX i clicked the VCD preset (or chose MPEG4 mencoder), but for some reason it said the frame rate was 1.0. I changed that to NTSC. Then i set the check box under tools to keep the elemental streams. Since QT won't decode WMV, i also clicked the Decode Using MPlayer box.

When the conversions were finished, it reported a failure. The Log showed about a jillion: Invalid plen! Plen=0 errors. The .mpv stream came out okay, but no audio. However, there were apparrently some kind of problems with the video because MPlayer had some problems decoding it. So many portions of the .mpv stream were garbled.

VLC didn't play the WMVs even as well as MPlayer. The sound was extremely jerky and the video even more garbled.

I have it. It's strictly for WMA (audio). No WMV video.

I guess Terran Cleaner is able to convert Microsoft crab-formats into something useful.

Cons are, it's slow, it's expensive, it's unstable.

Last time used it on OS9, so can't say about speed and stability in X, but it's expensive even nowadays.
