  1. Howdy all,

My query concerns embedding permanent subtitles (SRT) into an SVCD from an AVI file. I understand that the answer to this particular question may already be on this forum. Unfortunately I have been unable to locate it using the search feature and generally browsing the forums (Perhaps I am a fool). If the answer is already here please send me through a link and you’ll hear no more from me, and delete this post to oblivion. (Unless I have problems, which I probably will).

I have located some instructions on how to do this already (DOOM9 and other sites). But the process is always flawed and/or outdated. I believe I am quite capable of following instructions, but the outcome is never what the instructions promise.

I appreciate any help; a Good Samaritan can give me. I know it’s free help, meaning someone has to donated their time and I thank you all for it.

    Query:
I wish to embed permanent subtitles into an SVCD.

Eg: I have an AVI file (Video.AVI) and a subtitle file for the Video (English.srt). The end result I want is an SVCD file with permanent subtitles. Preferably encoded as 4:3 but with borders (Movie 16:9) so that the subtitles appear in the borders (This makes sense I reckon, so the subtitles are not in the image).

I hope I have explained myself enough and not too much…

    Thanks for your time.
    Cheers,

  2. Fairly simple proposition

Virtual Dub with Subtext plug in installed (comes with Vobsub)

Video in full processing mode, do your resizing first (I use Daniel Graft s Smart Resize filter for that). Audio in direct stream copy.

Load the Subtext plugin, load the SRT file (play with the bottom margin - I put it at 10 instead of 20 pixels to prevent the subs from spilling over onto the movie area).

Preview the video and you should have a nice AVI with borders and subs in the border.

Now start the Virtualdub Frameserver and frameserve your video - it will create a VDR file (file handler).

Open the VDR file with your encoder of choice (I use TMPGEnc), set it up the way you like, and fire away.

Thank you very much. I'll get right on on it.

But would you be able to explain what you mean by "Load the Subtext plugin" I'm totally lost. I have installed Vobsub and Vobsub for VirtualDub. Do I just run VobSub it the background whilst doing these steps?

    Thanks again.

Not quite. You should already have your subtitle file. Load the video into Virtual Dub. Select Video-->Filters...-->Add-->TextSub. When the TextSub requester appears, load the subtitle file-->OK-->OK.

Now when you play the movie, the subs will appear in the output window, usually the video on the right. If the subs look good to you, save under a different file name, using the codec you want.

    Hello.

    Thank you heaps!!!

One last question, I am sure . It is all well and good except, I do not know how to resize the video to have borders. Is this a plugin I need to install? If so, is it easy to use? And is it free?

I really appreciate all your time.

  6. I managed to find the filter (It's Donald Graft not Daniel Graft)

But the output file reckons it's gonna be 15GB , where as the original file was only 700MB . Does this sound right? Is there anything I can do about this?

    Thanks again.

You can use a different codec.

Shall I ask the silly question?

How in the world do I do that?

This is the last question I promise.

    Thanks again & again & again. :P

Select Video-->Compression. Select the codec available and save to a new file name. Remember if you want to use a DivX, XviD, or Huffyuv codec, you have to install them first.

  10. It's all good now, except for the resize filter. I'm using Donald Graft's smart resize filter for Virtualdub.

It works but the visual size for the image is haved. so that when I burn it back to svcd it looks terrible. How can I letter box it at it's original size??? Or at least 480*480. The original size is:640*272 (Movie)

What settings should I use for this filter? Or perhaps you can recommend another filter?

    Thanks

  12. I happened on a way to do this...

    Use DVD2SVCD

    Under the "Subtitles" tab

    Select "Rip Subtitles"

    Then select "Permanent Subtitles"

    Under the "Conversion" tab

    Click "Go"

Under "Go" select "Add external subtitle streams"

    Add your desired subtitles...

    Bingo!!!!

    Hooray!!!

i would also like to merge avi+srt. when i load the TextSub 2.23 plugin in VirtualDub and try to open the srt file, it does nothing! the textbox where the path to the srt file should be is empty and all i can do is click on "Open..." again. if i open a ssa file instead, it seems to work. what doesn't it like about my srt file?
