When I simply try to go into a folder that has a WMV file in it, explorer.exe crashes. Does anyone know why?

  2. I would just try to repair IE. I had alot of issues with it a couple weeks ago. When I would close it, it would crash and give a "Kernal32.dll" error. I ran IE repair and it fixed it perfectly.

Read the error message and what module the error occurs in and see if it is the same one. But personally, I would just repaid the IE install.

I am not talking about Internet Explorer. I am talking about EXPLORER.EXE (Your desktop: Start Menu, System Tray, Wallpaper if you have one, desktop icons.)

  4. Its pretty much the same system. They use the same files to do the rendering. Do me a favor, power up IE, in the addy bar type in "C:" as the address. Click go. Notice anything familiar about the interface.

Thats why when mine kept crashing after closing sites OR folders on my machine I knew it was an explorer issue. I repaired it and it was all good.

    Let me ask my wife....

I get that same error as well, but the folders I open don't have WMV files, just MPG files in them (Usually over a gig in size)

I run WinXP Home with NTFS on the harddrive, so I would think that file size shouldn't be a problem....

I don't have an answer as I haven't researched why mine does the same thing as yours.

  6. Try going into file associations and associate the WMV file with Notepad or some other app.

Then try going into the folder again. Error... then it is not the Media Player 'links' into the OS.

If it is ok then I would dload all DirectX and Windows Media Player updates. Also, What app do you normally use to playback the wmv files? Windows Media... then update... some other app - update it as well.

I use Media Player Classic to play all video files on my PC.
