I just applied some thermal paste to my processor, and having rebooted my (PS2) keyboard no longer works.
Clearly I've disturbed something but having tried a further two PS2 keyboards I'm getting nothing (and don't have a USB keyboard).
Anyone any ideas what I can do (other than buy a USB keyboard?).
I would check my BIOS settings but can'y hit delete, it doesn't work (obviously!)

Well sounds like something along the lines of a Bad PS2 port, which we likely can't help with. HOWEVER if you want to give it a shot you can try to clear the CMOS, there should be a jumpter you can remove to do so someone ont he system board.

Yeah, I've tried swapping the keyboard cable into the PS2 mouse port but no different.

It's been suggested I try find it in add new hardware, I'll give that a go tonight.

This has happened to me before, and I never solved it.

Is it true you shouldn't take out the lead from the PS2 port whilst the machine is on?
I'm always careful with this, but have no doubt this could be a factor this time around

    Yeah treeb...
....think the poor bastard has been overworked lately.

I also heard that PS/2 is not hot-pluggable. I do it anyway sometimes, with no ill effects but I suppose you may just be unlucky.

If you can't find the CMOS clear jumper, whip the battery out for a minute. That always cured mine when I overclocked way too far and it couldn't even get into BIOS!

  8. If you used something like Artic Silver (electrically conductive), maybe you dropped a small glob on the board and short-circuted something.

Is the PS/2 port controlled by the "Southbridge" directly or by a separate I/O chip through the "Southbridge"? You'll have to look in your manual.

Funny, the PS/2 port is typically near the CPU ZIF socket, while the Southbridge is usually on the opposite side of the board.

Anyway, a quick look couldn't hurt.

I removed the CMOS and still couldn't use the PS2 port, and no, I didn't use arctic silver
Man, it was sure frustrating last night reading and not being able to post.

I did do some encoding/disk printing work, I had to copy and paste individual letters from the web to make a title for my final encoding file and disk surface.
Have you any idea how hard or long that took?

When I tried to search for new hardware I found something, but I can't take a screenshot because of, doh! my keyboard problem.
It was a SM bus or something, but it couldn't find a driver and couldn't find anything form the net.
I haven't installed any new hardware other than the new HDD last week, I've no idea what it is

    ?

If the mouse worked when plugged into the keyboard port i'd say it's your keyboards. oh, another thing, my PS2 doesn't always turn off properly. turn your machine off at the wall, leave it 30 seconds, connect KB then turn back on.

i don't think it's a driver issue if you can't use your KB to get into bios.

    however:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-7586-0.html?forumID=68&threadID=23063&start=0

running the install prog on his motherboard CD cured it for him.

    you plugged the ****** in?
Or you realised the KB plugged in was the one on the floor not the one on the desk?

it's a wireless KB and had no batteries in it because you stole them for your anal vibrator - that's got to be it!!
