the two bands that really matter in metal.

    Morbid Angel
    Death
    Deicide
    Strapping Young Lad
    Bolt Thrower
    Carcass
    Gorguts
and many more great bands that I can't think of now.

As to who is the most "metal", well there is nothing more metal than BASS so it has to be a tossup between bassgods Steve Harris and Joey Demaio.

Also anything having to do with R. J. Dio.

Although I am a big fan of the first six albums, I have ultimately discovered that Dio era Sabbath is much better than Ozzy era. The songs are just better. Heaven and Hell is probably the best Sabbath record and also the epitome of a rock record.

heaven and hell was great. you just need a broad definition of metal to include it (or rainbow, whitesnake, deep purple...).

I knew that may have rocked the boat. BUT... Let's see, who is more metal: Ozzy who wanted to change to direction of Sabbath into a more froofy hippie-ish band in the 70s were it not for Geezer, or Dio, who has continuosly been one of THE best metal voices without compromise for years. Also Dio, never had a lame MTV show called "The Dios". Ughh.

I was once like you housepig, a loyal Ozzy Sabbath booster. But I noticed that while the bluesy noodling of Warpigs or Wheels of Confusion sounded a little tired after a few listened, the skillful grandeur and good songwriting of Children of the Sea or Country Girl still sounded rockingly fresh after the umpteenth listen.

I am also kind of puzzled why a Halford fan would prefer Ozzy over Dio. Dio is clearly the more skilled and talented vocalist.

And remember, if you Play with FireyouBurn you Fingers! and also If you listen to Fools... the Mob Rules!

I do not need to do that. Me and TGPO are currently living together in San Fransisco and we both play bass in a Techno Tribute band to Priest called "BURNIN' UP".

Lots of these new "metal" bands are just shadows of what used to be, the greats from the 70s and 80s.

The 90s (like Pantera) was the end of many of them.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a total die-hard Sabbath with Ozzy fan - Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die are, with a couple of exceptions, terrible albums. So I'm more down with the first 6.

I liked Dio more when he was with Rainbow - "Long Live Rock & Roll" is one of the best hard rock songs ever. I'll pull out my copy of Mob Rules and give it another chance, it's been a long time since I played it.

As for Halford, I'm actually not that big a Priest fan, I was just breaking my balls on a VHS-to-DVD transfer of the Sabbath-with-Rob-Halford concert from '92*, so I thought I'd commemorate it in my avatar.

( * brought on by your boy Dio at the last minute, as he got wind of the reunion that Black Sabbath planned for the last night of the tour, and pulled a primadonna routine about "not sharing the stage with Ozzy". So they got Halford on short notice. )

  21. Anybody remember hearing this one on the radio?

    Radio DJ: Back Rockwards.
    Listener: Is is Pantera?
Radio DJ: NO! IT IS NOT PANTERA, PEOPLE! Good God...
    Radio DJ: Back Rockwards.
Listener: Well if it's not Pantera I don't know who it is (hangs up phone)
    Radio DJ: Help me.

Pantera kicks ass. Then and now.

Ohhhhh.....I completely forgot about Dio Now that you bring it up....I agree. While the Ozzy Sabbath was very good, the Dio Sabbath was also very good. I think towards the end Ozzy did start fizzeling with the group and not that Dio was so much better but he did breathe new life into the group and took them back to a more metal feel to their music. There is no question who is the better vocalist...hell I can't even understand Ozzy on TV let alone when he's in concert. Ozzy just hit MTV to capitalize on his name, I saw the show...once....it is horrible...utter shitte

Though the people listed in the list aren't anything close to what I'd call metal, here's my votes in some sort of order-

    Pantera
    Forced Entry
    Dark Angle
    Dying Fetus
    Pantera
    Fear Factory
    Carcas
    Hate Breed
    Lamb Of God
    Pantera
Anthrax (older shit and some S.O.D)
    Exodus
    Exhorder
    Pantera
    Soil Work
    Death
    Strapping Young Lad
    Pantera

and of course Slayer, but only during the Dave Lombardo years

I did like a couple of Black Sabath songs, Sweet Leaf, War Pigs, but not a fan.

    Lemmy is not GOD btw.

Arch Enemy, Otep and Kittie too, 'cause chicks that scream are kewl.

While you're out it, you might want to give both Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die second chances as well. Those are always put down because of the circumstances the band made them under, and also because they sound a little "generic" rock-like. But, I can't help loving both of these albums. They are pure rock and roll. You can tell that Sabbath just made these albums to get them over with and they are both no-bullshit riff-riff song records. You get to hear Bill Ward sing and also (many people will agree) that Dirty Women is one of if not the best Sabbath song ever.

But then again, my favorites Zeppelin albums are Presence and In Through the Out Door.

    Some of my favs:
    Suicidal Tendancies
    Accept
    Overkill
I saw Overkill with some friends at L'Amour's here in Brooklyn before the place got closed down. They were great especially Blitz (though thrash is not my thing). Also saw DEICIDE at L'amours, that was a great show even though Glen Benton seemed to be very fat, pissed off, and sick of playing. His bass playing is quite amazing however, while growling, he is constantly picking the bass at superspeed while moving his left hand up and down the neck from fret 1 to 12. He does this for two hours. He must of jerked off A LOT as a kid.
