they are returned ....
they belong to the studio, not the theater ...
you want to put a 35mm projector in your house ? it has been done many times but you should know that you will need two of them for changeover or a platter system and a rewind system ... also a dolby cinema system and releated gear, lamp houses + power supplies..
figure on about 40,000$ for a cheap system with used projectors, including wireing and such .... plus a screen , plus renovations and a sound system (10,000$)
also -- in many parts of the usa, you will need to hire a lic projectionist to run them -- by law and also by the union rules..
there is also a lot of firecodes relating to projection equipment .. so a building permit and special insurance is required .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Do they still use reels of film nowadays? I thought in recent years they used DVDs.

Well, in High School I was a manager of a movie theater. Normally what happens is the movie theaters rent the films. After they are done, the reels are shipped back to the distributors. Its up to the distributors what to do with it then. Some are hard asses (like Disney) others aren't so bad.
However, often times the previews are not returned. They are supposed to be destroyed, but they are not too hard to get. The downside is some distributors will come after you. In fact our projectionist was caught by Fox for selling a trailer of "X-Files" over the internet. I am not sure exactly how that turned out, but I think he settled with a fine."A beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct."

you can buy some older movies ..... there is a trade for these ...
newer ones you will have to rent -- charges could be anywhere from $500-50,000$ +
if you want dts also , add another 10,000$ to your costs ..."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -

Go with the lcd projector idea. We spent less than $5,000 for surround, projector and DVD player (discount electronics). The main cost was converting the "guest house" into the theater.Gutted it, installed tiered seating and a screen (board). Add a simple soda dispenser and real (surplus) popcorn machine, and you've got 80 happy moviegoers. 8)
