resizing type in virtual dub (whats the best quality)?

I downloaded the pinnacle codec and I can now save my clips that I cut the widescreen black bars off of as DV. I also have to resize the image back to 720 x 480 though. The virtual dub resizing has different ways to do it like: Bilinear, Nearest neighbor, and bicubic. If you take a look at that option you'll see what I mean.

Anyways, Which resizing method do you think will give me the best quality for cuting off the black bars and resizing the actuall image?

Whenever resizing to a higher resolution its best to use bicubic.

Thanks, To add to the question, which bicubic should I choose? I think theres 3 bicubic options, .60, .75, and 1.00. Again which of these then would be best for resizing a wide screen image that has had the black bars cut off of it.


Also Is there a website that will explain this stuff, like the resizing lingo? Part of my problem is my internet does not work at home (I'm at work) so I don't get a lot of time to research video editing.

The two extra parameters are as you can see referred to as "blurring" and "ringing", the avisynth manuals say "From c>0.6 the filter starts to "ring". You won't get real sharpness, what you'll get is crispening like on a TV set.". Thats why i try to stick with "0, 0.6" or "0, 0.5".

Okay, so does everyone agree that bicubic 0.6 is the best resize for takeing a DV clip of anolog widescreen, cutting the black bars off, resizeing the image back to 720 x 480 and re-saving the clip in virtual dub as pinnacle DV?

Is Bicubic resizing better that Lancoz? Also I don't quite get what the difference between getting a sharper picture and/or crisper picture is.

From what I read from that link, having a sharper image is only bad if you intend to compress the clip to a low bit-rate. Shouldn't the Pinnacle DV codec have a high enough bit rate for that not to be an issue?

What ultimatly looks better, a sharper or criper image on a dvd?

The default of bicubicresize is 1/3 for both blur and ring, did you read that part? Kind of public preference, that should mean people like a little blurred and just a little ringing, so maybe its worth a try? I havent experimented with blurring on video, i just seen it can make a hell of a difference for digital photo. So, blurring can be good, but i cant think of a scenario where crispening is good. 0.75 in vdub is probably not crispy enough to be visible anyways.

Lanczos is said to keep more detail and therefor require higher encoding bitrate to be better than bicubic. Its not available in virtualdub, so i saw no reason to mention it earlier. And yes, the correct spelling is lanczos. It sounds like something my girlfriend would buy, maybe she buy a Lanczos tshirt for me next time? The resize from the Paris studios or something. What about videohelp.com tshirts?

Laczos is an option in the virtual dub I just downloaded. Just thought I'ld clarify that.

Sorry. Yes, lanczos3 in virtualdub, i checked right after i posted. Lanczos3 is the same as lanczos4, keeps detail very well, so maybe use it if you intend to encode at a somewhat high bitrate.

Do you think 6mbits/sec mpeg2 will be high enough to make it worth while to use lanczos3 for resizing?

Like I say I'm going to be first encoding to Pinnacle DV and send the entire film (45mins) back to my camcorder for encoding to dvd later.


Oh, Heres a good question. What is the best way to encode DV to Mpeg2 (DVD)? I ask because I have the luxury of useing a OPTIBASS mpeg2 capture card at my work.

What would give me better results, 1) Encode the DV movie to MPEG2 on the computer or 2) Just capture the movie from my camcorder with the optibase card via S-Video conectors?

As for your mpeg2 cap card, try the capture forum, sure some experts there can help with advice on your card.
I dont know what would be a "good" limit for mpeg2 bitrate to use lanczos, 6000CBR isnt so much for 720x480, at VBR it would be more than enough. I guess Adam know more, if he still follow this thread.
