Subtitle font help...Kill Bill Uncut

Sorry if this has been posted before, tried a search but came up empty. I recently acquired a fan made version of the Japanese Uncut Kill Bill (I do own the actual disc as well) with subtitles for only the Japanese speaking parts. As some of you may know, on the original disc you either have to toggle or leave the subtitles on for all speaking parts.

My problem is that the font the person used is awful...it is see through and has jagged edges making it almost impossible to read. Is there a way to just change the font of the subtitles and reburn it?

then use the original disk --- whats the point of fooling around with what sounds like a warez version ..

Because the original has subs for the whole movie which I don't need. I only need the subs for the Japanese speaking parts, which someone already went through the work of doing, but used a crap font. It seems to me it is easier to just change the font then to go through and have to edit all the subs on the original to take out what I don't want.

Why should I go through the process of re-encoding my original if it isn't necessary? If it is necessary either way, then I would use the original, but that is why I asked if I could just change the font.

But there is an option in DVDShrink called 'Forced Subtitles' that only displays the subtitles when the main track is not in the country language

Basically, Kill Bill is a good example, I'm assuming if you turn this option on in DVDShrink, then when you get the Japanese speaking section in Kill Bill this is when the subtitles automagically appear

When they speak English again, they disappear

Do you have the Japanese DVD release?

If so you can rip the subtitles and edit them yourself.

I've done that with other movies.

For instance I recently did this with the INTEGRAL HARD version of PHENOMENA. The movie is 95% English with some scenes only in Italian. There are English subs but like the Japanese KILL BILL DVD the subs are either on or off 100% of the time. You can't make them appear just when the soundtrack slips into Italian.

So I ripped the subs using VobSub. Then imported that into Subtitle Workshop and cut out the subs that aren't needed (i.e., when English is being spoken) then re-encoded the DVD to fit a DVD-R and hard-encoded the subs into the image using an AviSynth plug-in.

Worked like a charm!

So if you have the original Japanese DVD release of KILL BILL VOL. 1(which is the only official uncut version on DVD) then yes you can do it yourself.

I didn't use VobSub ... instead I think I used SubRip ... to edit the subs you need them in a text format.

I am sorry for my idiocy regarding this as I have ripped and burned many dvds, yet never have I re-authored or changed anything. (I mostly download and burn live taper-approved concert dvds.)

I am just not getting why I cant rip the subs from the new version with one of those sub rippers and change the font then re-author that way?

wouldn't that make more sense than ripping all the subs again from the original, figuring out which stuff is English versus Japanese (without a script I have no idea how to even go about doing it), then re-ripping and re-encoding the original video again?

Again, sorry for my ignorance and I appreciate the help. it is the only way I will learn this stuff.

Rip the subs from the original Japanese DVD using SubRip. Open the subtitle file up in Subtitle Workshop.

Now watch the movie with Subtitle Workshop in front of you (helps if you have a TV in the same room as the computer).

Watch the movie from start to end cutting out all the subs you don't need. When done you have just the subtitles that are needed.

Resave the subtitle file.

Re-encode the video with Avisynth ... reading the subs into the AviSynth script so that they get overlaid on-top of the video. Best to convert the movie from 16x9 WS to 4:3 WS which is no big loss if you only have a 4:3 TV.

That's how I do it.
