Hi, I have an NEC ND2500A DVDRW & LiteOn JLMS XJ-HD166S DVDROM which are able to rip most DVD's but occasionally there are some that cannot be read. I always get Cyclic Redundancy errors or just plain unable to read a particular sector.
I have tried DVD Decrypter, SmartRipper, DVDShrink and CloneDVD but all stop at a particular point. I have updated firmware where I can find it plus ensured Im in DMA not PIO. The disc is clean with no scratches.
To me it seems theres a stage where software isnt going to cut it and its a hardware issue as my friends old Samsung DVDROM was able to read it.
I cannot see an area on the site with readers comments on DVDROMs and their ripping prowess. Could people please give me their recommendations.
Thank you.

If you're using DVD SHRINK just on it's own and you get that cycle redundancy error then try this method:
RIP TO YOUR HARD DRIVE IN FILE MODE with DVD DECRYPTER, then use DVD SHRINK to compress then burn with NERO BURN.
Or try playing the dvd in your pc for a few moments then rip.
Try using a older version of DVD SHRINK like version 3.05 BETA. Here's a link for it: http://mrbass.org/dvdshrink/dvdshrinkold/
Some people have had the same error message that you got and used a older version of DVD SHRINK. Also it could be a software conflict. Try using NERO BURN to burn.
How is your dvd burner & dvdrom hooked up in your pc? Secondary Master or Slave?

Hi Budz, thanks very much for the reply. Yes, I have used DVD Decrypter ... I tried lots of programs but all failed at a certain point with this particular DVD. I am using the latest version of shrink so will see if an earlier version does the business.
I dont have the disc now but my friend with Win98 using a Samsung DVDROM was able to rip with the same version of shrink, although it crawled through the problem area for a few seconds before continuing on. Thats why I am thinking hardware problem.

There's nothing wrong with a Liteon 166S. It's what I use, I've bought 3 of them now... although recently they updated it to the 167S.
The only PROBLEM with it is that it is firmware-limited to 8x reading for +/- R/RW discs... something which can be worked around with custom firmware available online.
If all methods are failing at the same place in both your burner AND your ROM, might I suggest CLEANING the disc? Or playing the movie first and THEN ripping? The fact that your friend's ROM reads it merely means that it's more tolerant of dust/fingerprints/peanut butter on the disc than yours is - not necessarily a GOOD thing, per se.
