Why of why would anybody special order DVD+R DL especially five discs for $30. If you really need to make non-compressed backup of a 9.4 GB disc, just use two DVD-Rs or something.

What make you think DVD-R DL will be coming any time soon?

Die hards I guess. Some people want it all on 1 disk, 1 side no matter the cost.

  8. I am only going to use the DL discs for backing up my library of college and pro football games. I want them on DLs if possible, but other than that, I will use single layered discs.

I don't know. Why do we burn DVDs at all? After all, we can fit the same amount of info on 7 CD-Rs.

And BTW, stop repeating that 9.4 GB number. Dual layer discs DO NOT hold that much. They hold around 8.5 GB (8,500,000,000 bytes).

I thought he was referring to pressed DL discs. They can hold up to 9.4GB, can't they?

He was talking about making a backup of such a disc, not backing up to such a disc?

I've confused myself on this issue so many times I know better than to even open my mouth when the subject matter comes up.

    DVD-9 = Dual-Layer = 8.5 GB
    DVD10 = "Flipper" = Double-Sided/Single-Layer = 9.4 GB

  14. You guys can have all that DL stuff when it first comes out if you want.

But me, I am buying the DL drive because it's not much more than 8X SL drives. As for DL disks I am going to wait till I can get the 17-18.4gig DVDs

Heck if we have single 5.4 flippers now for a total or 9.4gigs on 2 sides, then how long before we have flippers dual layered both sides

Then I maybe can put the entire Lord of the rings on ONE disk
Hmm, could I really stand to watch that for 9 hours or more???
Guess I got burned out on it, never bought movie 3 yet. Perhaps someday I will see the end?

Please don't say they can't make DL flippers or state any facts why it's imposible. Do a search about imposibilities of making DL -R +R disks and burners. Should get tons of results with facts and figures why it can't be done. And what ever happened to Blue Ray 20gigs I heard was the next generation, back before daul layers came around??

  15. In my case, I had nothing to lose. I had the Liteon SOHW-812S. I paid around $100 at the time (ok I had $100 to lose). The drive was hackable for DL writing and meaning that I have 3 other DVD burners I decided to take a chance and it worked. So at least I can play around a little with this DL recording.

2.4 writing speed is quite slow and the media is quite expensive. I wouldn't buy a DL burner at this time either however, they aren't that expensive. I wonder why.

  17. You know, it's only a matter of time before the true DVD burning enthusiasts start screaming for a DL/DS recordable disc.

That would be as follows: DVD-18 (Dual-Side/Dual-Layer) with 15.9 Gigabytes (aka 17.08 billion bytes) if we assume the -R or +R version is based on the same logical specifications as the pressed version.

I'm wating for DS/ML discs myself.

Yep, I think I saw my NEC is also hackable for DL.
I been thinking about getting a new burner, one that reads/writes ram disks, So I will probably buy an 8X LG model and Dual layer, like you said, they came out cheap for some reason.

I expected the DL to come out with starting prices around $200 or well above.
Seems each new drive model comes out cheaper than the last now.
Remember the High prices to get a new 4x drive when they came out, then, 8X now is already below well $100
Also the big price difference in single R or both R format drives. My 2x -R only drive was $178, I think Sony was the only dual format then and about $400 forgot the X but I think that one was still a 2x, might have been 4x?

Maybe the reason for the cheap prices is that the drives aren't that different and it's the disks that make the dual layer? After all, if we can just software hack an NEC or whatever to make it write daul layer, then maybe that's about all they are doing at the factories too. Obviousily we are not adding new lasers, second lasers, re-adjusting laser angles or anything else manually.

Anyway, I will wait till the disks drop to around $2.50 for dual layer disks before I worry to much about buying those, though if I could get some around $5 I'd probably experment a time or two just for fun, maybe a 25 pack once.

It was my understanding that all the optics had to do was refocus through one layer to see the other. They already do that when reading a pressed DVD-9, so I don't see why an existing DVD±R/W burner wouldn't need anything more than you described...

Maybe a change in power output, but certainly not something outside of what the firmware could already handle?

    I smell greed.
    Quote Quote
  20. Greed, that smell just lingers forever doesn't it!
I like the smell of a skunk much better, at least it does go away eventually

My thoughts are about the same as yours on that. When reading a dual layer disk (comercail) it would seem as though it just reads through the first layer to get to the second layer, basically.

However in burning a disk, I kinda wondered how it would burn through the first layer to get to the second layer? I suppose it might not be that complicated with one theory I have. Burn the first layer with lower power then increase power to burn the second layer. Since it is a write once disk, when you burn the first layer and it is permanent you can then shoot through that layer to the second layer provided you do not fry/damage the already written first layer. Not sure if that's what they are doing but it sort of makes sence. If this is the case, I wonder if we could ever have DL RW disks. With an RW it would seem that when shooting through an already written first layer you would erase it. BUT if you wrote the second layer first then lower power and write the first layer last it could work. The problem I see it then would be if you wanted to erase the data on the second layer only, shooting through the first layer might melt the dye again also destroying that data.

(OK, we don't have 'blocks' out here, more like Sections. But you get my point.)

  25. Americal has changed the pricing of Dual Layer disc. It's now $14.95 for 1 and $69.75 for a 5 pack. There is no way I am going to buy them now.

I can't wait for the DL discs to show. I've been itching to buy that new Sony 700 (my Sony 500a only rips at 2x & its driving me crazy).

I don't like the costs being quoted, but I would have to test any DL drive I buy against my Panasonic player. If a DL drive is not compatible it is going back and I'll have to try another.

Check out some of the new DL drives coming out...

Gee my Sony 500a rips along at 4x for + media.... you must be doing -r....

The last firmware update for the 500a is ok.

I however just got an NEC DL burner.... Now if I could just find inexpensive media....

  28. I actually justd ordered 20 DL disks from SonyStyle.
    Yes for the $14.99 each.

They are being used to backup DVD-DATA disks that can not be broken up into multiple parts, or re-compressed using any of the "standard tools" out there.

They are karaoke song disks, and the business relies on them.

The originals are around $150+ averaging around $200.
We currently have 10 disks, which comprise of nearly 7,000 songs.
Which is about 40% of the songs in the business library.

So at $15 bucks a backup, this is money well spend.
Two copies of each... One for use in the primary system, and one for use in the emergency backup system, with the originals safe at the office.

Also with a hard drive backup of the image of each DVD disk... covers us for a good long time, since the vendor is very difficult with their "lifetime" warranty on the disks.

But as for a DVD-Movie disk?... Or a general data disk (when you can break it up), you wold be nuts to spend $15 on one disk, when you can get single layer blanks for less then $0.75 each.
