    hey,
iv been trying to decompress and recompress audio from an .avi file to get the best quality audio posible for a SVCD and iv tried using virtual dub but iv been hearing that the decompressor that comes with the bundle of avi2vcd works better. so i decompressed the video using avi2vcd decompressor but it decompresses the audio with the video and not just the audio. then i took that decompressed file from the avi2vcd decompressor to virtual dub and got just the audio but its 1.4 gigs for just the audio.and thats too big... am i heading in the right direction? or is there a better way?
    thanx

  2. If you want to create a compliant SVCD, don't you have to use MP2 audio? I havn't made a SVCD in a while so correct me if I'm wrong. I do all my audio like this: Capture AVI, save off the wav with virtualdub, adjust the volume with Goldwave, Convert to AC3 with Besweet at 384k bitrate. You can convert to MP2 with besweet as well. Uncompressed wav files are huge.

well, what iv been doing in the past is get the .avi, then going strait to TMPGEnc and converting it to an mpeg2 using TEMPEnc. and the video and audio is all doen in the conversion. im not sure if it converts the audio to an mp2 or not. but it converts the audio to 44100hz and 224 bitrate but the audio isnt as clear as it should be. so i decompressed the whole movie using avi2vcd and then took the decompressed movie into virtualdub and got the wav audio and put the original .avi video and the decompressed wav into TMPGenc. and converted to an mpeg2. this worked but im not sure if its the best way. iv never tried converting the audio to ac3 maybe u could give me a link to a gide to doing so.
    thanx in advance.

I generally get around 100mb (give or take a bit) of uncompressed stereo audio (16bit, 48khz) per 10 minutes of film when cleaning up avis for encoding. So 1.4gb isn't out of the question. Unless you are having sync problems, or are going to process the audio in an editor to clean it up, there is little to be gained by uncompressing it though.

so just by uncompressing doesnt do a whole lot? i have to clean it up with a program? say i have an .avi:

    File : 677 MB (677 MB), duration: 1:46:48, type: AVI, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 48 %

    Video : 557 MB, 729 Kbps, 23.976 fps, 576*240 (2.21:1), DIV3 = DivX v3 MPEG-4 (Low-Motion)

    Audio : 120 MB, 157 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = MPEG Layer-3

and i want to convert it into an svcd using TEMPEnc, and in the past ive been happy with the sound that just TEMPEnc encodes with just puttin the .avi file into TMPEnc with out doing anything to the audio. but it always seems like the voices are high pitched and scartchy sounding and i want better sound. so what would the best way to go to get the highest quality sound? ac3? and whats a program i could clean up sound with? im not sure what to do lol.. thanx to anyone who could help!
