  1. I have video that I pulled off of my camcorder that is 15 gigs in size. Is there a compression tool out there that brings this into the size for a single DVD but still has really good viewing quality?

are there free utilities out there that are not overly complicated to use? Any help is greatly appreciated.

TMPGEnc can do that, it's not free, but it has a trial period. What type of video are you talking about? I assume DV. Then it's about 3.5MB/S. The running time of the video is much more important than the size.

  3. What do you want to do with the footage? Keep it for archiving or play it in standalone DVD player? There is no very easy way to convert DV to DVD, but the HOW TO -> CONVERT in the menu to the left is a good place to start, its easy once you get started.

  4. I am trying to help my brother out. He is using the Cannon Digital Video Camcorder NTSC ZR85 DV. Its digital but its tape. The little ones.

    Its an AVI file.
    11.5 gigs.
56 minutes and 14 seconds long some of which will be edited out.

That is about as specific as I can get for ya. Is there a conversion tool? Also what is the best program you all use to edit the video? I can give him afteraffects and premiere. Premiere may be the way to go.

  5. Very Good MPEG software encoders:

    TMPGEnc Plus

    Cinema Craft Encoder (CCE Basic)

    Mainconcept MPEG Encoder

  6. An easy way to convert the DV tape to DVD is with a standalone DVD Recorder (one with firewire input). Record the entire 56 minute tape on a single DVD-RW or whatever the recorder burns to at XP (highest) quality, then edit the DVD video files on the computer with Womble MPEG-VCR or MPEG Video Wizard.

You can also perform basic MPEG cutting and joining (I Frames only) with Cuttermaran or MPEG2Schnitt (both are freeware).
