I had a heck of a time getting started copying my Video DVD collection to backups. I use WIN98SE on a home built system. I installed WIN98SE because it is best for my gaming, which is my priority. I use FAT32 of course.
1) I use DVD Decryptor to create an ISO image of the DVD and remove copy protection.
2) I use Daemon Tools To mount the ISO images from #1 as a virtual drive. I have to do this because of the 4gb file size limit of FAT32 file system. (Remove original DVD from drive before doing this, otherwise you will get weird errors).
3) Then DVD Shrink to compress the virtual ISO disk to under 4gb (FAT32 again).
4) Now I use DVD Decrypter to burn the compressed file.
Works great.

Why not use DVD Shrink first and then what ever software you DVD burner came with(should be RecordNow DX) to burn the disc as a data disc. Before upgrading to XP I used WIN98, and thats all I needed to do, and still do.
Oh yea, wrong forumEjoc's CVD Page:
DVDDecrypter -> DVD2AVI -> Vobsub -> AVISynth -> TMPGEnc -> VCDEasy
