For anyone that's interested, here are the results from a test of my Pioneer DVR-510.

I have never used 6 hour mode on my recorders before. Apparently, the small degradation in PQ is acceptable to me when recording with VHS tape sources.

The only time I've seen decent 6-hour was from PAL machines, never NTSC. So far, only an old Panasonic has shown good quality at 6-hour (well, not "good" but better than others, it seemed to have x288 interlace going on).

  4. @kcfoulk,

Your attitude sucks. You've demonstrated in less than 20 posts that your only purpose here is to make personal attacks against people who are willing to spend time and money to better this forum. Seeing that you've offered no evidence you've actually purchased and tested any DVD recorders to the level LordSmurf has, I think you're way out of line.

    Piss off.

This discussion is getting too heated, so I'm locking this thread.

Since I am not a mod, I will simply write "LOCKED" on my screen with a Sharpie and hope that works.

    Check out the pictures here:

I don't see a fan on that unit. Be very, very worried if that's the case.

  10. thanks Lordmurf.

If i understand well, LG DR4810 Chip is LSI.

I've got a Skystar DVB PCI card and capture digital streams and author them when they are DVD compliant (not always). For analog streams i use the analog input of a D8 camcorder sent directly by firewire to Studio 8, edited, coded MPG, ...... to much time consumming ! No programming possibilities ====> I'd like to buy a DVD recoder.

I red (understood ?) all your posts on DVD recorders. I know your favorite is JVC DRM 10SL, but it costs 499 euros, opposed to 335 euros for the LG DR 4810. I must think about it according to my financial possibilities.

In order to cut commercials and author DVD by themes , I need to get the original MPEG files. I red your method (digitalfaq) to edit DVD recorder discs. I used it (thanks) to retrieve my informations on a Medion DVD+Rw recorder disk (bad machine, returned immediatly !). Does this method work too with a DVD-RW burned with the DRM 10 ? Can a PC DVD player read this DVD-RW without been finalized (not needed for DVD+RW technology). If not, how much time is needed to finalize this disk ?

In my DVB experience, 720*576 at 4.5 Mb VBR (PAL) is good enough for digital streams so maybee good enough for analog Pal streams. Anything like that on DRM 10 ?

Sorry for so much questions !

I can easily get the JVC DVD-Video DVD-RW files off the disc to the PC following that same guide.

VR is a bit different on the DVD-RAM, but I suggest against RAM anyway for PC editing. Use the DVD-RW in DVD-Video mode, and you'll be fine. You must finalize a DVD-RW ... which may take 3-10 minutes. If disc full, maybe 2-3 minutes at most, no big deal.

I don't know too much on the LG machine, so really cannot compare. A good recorder takes more than the chips alone. The chips and motherboard (chips mostly) determine quality. The rest of the machine determines ease of use and lifetime. The JVC has everything in top quality. Compare to others: Apex had all but PSU issues. LiteON has imperfect motherboard use of the chips (CVBR) and then chassis issues (heat). Maybe the LSI LG is as good as the JVC? Maybe not? Test to find out, only real way. That's what got me 17 different recorders in past months: testing to find perfection. To me, JVC DRM10SL is it.
