  1. Hello, all. I've been trying to author a DVD from a DIVX AVI, unfortunately, in the resulting VIDEO_TS file, the audio is out of sync, by maybe a half-second.

The first time, I authored the 40 minute DVD using MPEG2WORKSX (which took about 10 hours to encode), then SIZZLE 0.1. The second time, I authored the DVD using FFMPEGX. Took about 5 hours and then there was a some sort of buffer underrun problem, so it didn't create a VIDEO_TS file, but combined the resulting from FFMPEGX streams using SIZZLE again. Again, the audio was out of sync. By this time, I was on the verge of throwing my computer out the window.

I noticed my DIVX movie file had a frame rate of 23.98, while the NTSC film default frame rater was 23.976. Does this make a difference, or does Quicktime just round up the figure when you look at the video properties of file? Just wondering.

Does anyone have a simple, guaranteed, bulletproof, idiot-proof method of making an in-sync AVI to DVD? I'm hesitant to try the trial & error method over and over again just because it takes forever to encode a DVD with my 400MHZ Sawtooth. If anyone could help me, I would be eternally grateful. Much thanks.

    Toast 6.0's video tab
MPEG2WORKS avi to mpeg2 followed by sizzle

you have to ensure your avi is synced because if it isnt then dont expect the dvd to be synced

  3. I already tried the MPEG2WORKS to SIZZLE method and got the audio sync problem I mentioned. The only time I used Toast to encode an AVI to DVD, the resulting video quality seemed really poor.

  4. Use Pulldown NTSC (3/2) encoding preset for Your AVI..It has to be encoded with pulldown flag cause input movie framerate is NTSC film 23.98...

that will cause sync problems if you dont do that!

the toast method isnt the best as you can see but it does work

i use ffmpegx or mpeg2works when i do avi to dvd - which isnt often but thats what i use

  6. Man, there's nothing like encoding MPEG2 that makes me want to get a new computer. Like I said, it took MPEG2WORKS about ten hours to encode a 40 minute video, and I have a 400MHZ G4 Sawtooth.

Anyone out there with the new G5? How long does it take you to encode a DVD (let's say a 2 hour movie for example)? Trying to figure out whether to take the plunge...

  7. Well, I finally acheived some level of success by taking the elementary streams created by MPEG2WORKSX, which look great, and joining the audio and video by using the video tab in TOAST 6, thus bypassing the Toast's MPEG2 encoder, which sucks. Now, it's all in sync (or at least close enough that the DVD is watchable). I guess this means that the audio sync problem is associated with SIZZLE.

Are there any other DVD authoring programs like Sizzle? I got errors when I tried to output a VIDEO_TS file using FFMPEGX. Thanks.

ive got a dual g4 1.25 and if memory serves 2 hour .avi is about 2 -3 hours. I would say wait until the dual g5 3.0ghz hits the scene, that baby should be great!

  10. Here's a hypothetical question that some in this forum might consider heresy. Does anyone have any experience using a PC (Windows-based) to do all this good DVD stuff (making backups, avi to DVD, etc.)? Does a PC enjoy any inherent advantages over Apples in this regard (free software, processing speed, etc.)?

I love my Mac but, it's just that PC's are so much cheaper...

ive done it with both [I wore a condom i swear!]

Actually, these days its about the same. Early on you could get al this cool software for PC that just wasnt there for mac [dvd shrinkers etc]

now its totally different. With the exception of a few apps [IfoEdit comes to mind] its pretty much equivalent

but this is when it comes to just backing up dvd's

in my mind, there is nothing that even comes close to the Pro Apps on the OSX platform. FCP, DVDSP etc.

all depends on what you plan to do and what you are willing to settle for. I have a pc but it gets used only to check email and type on when my mac is busy doing 10,000 things at once
    hahaha

  12. Back to the original problem. I was finally able to use Sizzle 0.1 to author a DVD without the audio sync issues. The disc image plays perfectly using the Apple DVD Player, but when I burn the disc image, it plays like shit on my normal DVD player (Sampo). The audio skips every few seconds. What gives? If it's not one thing, it's another... I don't think it's the media. I use Ridata and they've been pretty good to me.
