I think I was using 6x% and it looks fine when I'm watching the dvd on my computer. When I was testing it out on a 36" TV, I notice that the quality is really shitty. I can see small white spots. Kinda feels like i'm watching a vcd on a dvd.
should I split the dvd instead of compressing it instead?

I'm surprised that you noticed problems with such a small size change. 6% is very little, and I have been happy with discs transcoded by 24%.
One thing I'd do is watch the original and see if the problems exist there. I find myself being much more critical of backups because I know they have been transcoded. I have had a couple of discs where I have been watching the backup and saying "Jees, this is crap - look at all the noise/artifacts", then put in the original to find they were there all the time. -
