  1. Hi guys,

    I'm hunting for a program that will open and allow me to view the nucleotide sequence held in a .fna file. Here's all the "README" had to say about it:

    =======================
    File naming conventions
    =======================

    *.fna FASTA file format, nucleic acid sequences
    Just wondering if anyone knows what can do it. I've had a good hunt on the web, and I don't fancy e-mailing my genetics lecturer because he's a gimp.

    The file, uncompressed, is 3.47GB long, so slightly more that the 3.2 Gbp (Giga Base Pairs) held in the genome. Guess what organism that comes from! :P

    Thanks for any help!

  2. Just out of curiousity, I asked WordPad to open the file. It took 15 minutes to even display anything and my machine was delving deep into virtual memory. Trying to open 3.47GB of text can't be good. It eventually stopped responding altogether, so I had to restart.

    So, if anyone knows of an application specifically meant for opening .fna files then that would be preferable.

    However, if anyone could suggest a program like WordPad but one that is a little more resistant to opening immense files, I would greatly appreciate it!

  4. Thanks for the links. Link 1 looks to be more promising, but I am too tired and too busy to work with it just now.

    The file I have is (hopefully) the complete genome for Homo sapiens, resulting from the Human Genome project.

    Thanks again,
