I am using the Canopus ADVC-100 for capturing from a VCR to Premiere Pro. Since this has no Device Control, I have to start the capture and then just come back later to stop it. I end up with very large capture files and I only need a portion of it. I am stuck with this very large capture file until the final export.
The utility AVICodec says that the codec used by the ADVC-100 is Sony Digital Video.
What I would like to do is start my capture, leave for a while, come back later and stop it. I now have a very large capture file.
At this point I would like to simply crop off the beginning and ending portions that I don't need and then save this smaller AVI file for later editing. I need to know what is the preferred codec for doing this. Of course I am trying to not loose any quality and I also need it to be compatible for editing in Premiere.
At this time, I would like to stay with Premiere as my capture method.
Can someone please provide me with some input on this?
Thanks

As you are using Premiere to capture and want to use Premiere to edit, why don't you simply use Premiere to crop the beginning and end off? It is a video editing program after all and what you are doing is very basic editing.

Richard_G,
Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I will use Premiere to crop the beginning and end, but that is done by setting a new In and Out point. This does not actually modify the source file, it only sets markers within the clip timeline. When you are ready to create a cropped file, you would then export that timeline with the new In and Out point to a new file.
My question is which of the AVI codecs would I choose within Premiere Pro to create this second generation, rough cut, smaller file? I have a 30 GB capture file and may only need 10 GB of it. I would like to crop it down to that 10GB portion but still have a quality file that I can use in Premiere for my final editing.
Can you assist me with this?
Thanks -
As your source is DV format avi, save the cropped portion as DV format avi. I don't use Premiere, I use Ulead Mediastudio Pro which is aimed at the same market. That has a 'smartrender' feature which means it only re-encodes anything that has changed. I would assume that Premiere does much the same thing. As the bits of your source file that you want to keep haven't changed, it would simply crop the ends off and leave the bit you want as it is without re-encoding.
