I don't think CD compatibility is as much of an issue that it requires a page. Still, I would like to see CD-R media reviews.

888888 here is short version of the review:
"They all burn on anything, at any speed, no coasters spotted anymore"

However the longevity of CD-Rs is still up for discussion, though most of us would be retired by the time we have a chance to truly compare 50-years old CD-R discs...

I am not sure if you are being sarcastic but here is my story:

I have bought good CD-Rs and bad CD-Rs. Recently, I bought a 100 pack of Fuji Prodisc 48x CD-Rs that pretty much suck. When I try to backup an audio CD, they often have skips and very loud errors. That in my mind equals a coaster. There was another Prodisc 50 pack that I bought, also "high-speed" and it sucked even worse. If I could do it all over, I would just buy Taiyo Yuden CD-Rs on RIMA.com, I think they are around a quarter each now. If there was a CD-R media review section, maybe I would have.

BTW, DereX888, nice forum name- we are like brothers both of us with our 8s.

  5. I also agree that you can still get crap cd's. I have a bunch of CDRW's from Sony that constantly wig out on me using drag to disk functionality.

I have noticed that burns all tend to be better these days but you have to look close at the top of the CD. Some of them are so cheap that barely touching them will scratch the top surface (and of course fry you disk)... other cd have almost an indestructable surface. (Some Maxells I recently purchased have almost a DVD 'type' of top surface... very nice.

  6. I don't think I have ever had a problem with CDr/rw. And I usually go for the cheap ones and just use them now to transfer data from one Computer to the other.
DVD are so much better for data storage due to the amount of data they can hold.
If it works, don't fix it.

    My $.02....

Over the years since getting my first CDburner (HP 4020i scsi), and having multiple burners since (Yamaha, Sony, Lite-On, Plextor) I've always purchased Sony CD-Rs (happened to be Taiyo Yuden). While they were always a little more expensive then the other brands on the shelves, I have never had any problems burning or reading them in ANY drive or CD Player.

My friends and co-workers always got what ever was cheapest. They often would have problems with discs they would burn. Coasters, read problems, or working the first few times, then no longer being readable.

About two or three months ago, I was getting low on blank CD-Rs so I went to the store. They had no Sony, but TDKs were on sale. I thought TDK is a good brand. I thought what the hey, I needed them, so TDK it was...

Even after burns/verifies that are reported as "successful" by the burning software, I have problems reading these discs in most of my drives. Some times I have to insert/eject the disc 4 or 5 times until the drive reads it. Sometimes the drive NEVER reads them. Other CDs are read fine in these drives. Turns out, these TDK CD-Rs are made by CMC Magnetics, the brand that many people have problems with

Over the weekend, I found some Verbatim Datalife Plus "Super AZO" CD-Rs at Office Depot. After reading the Datalife Plus "Super AZO" DVDs are made by Mitsubishi Chemical Corp (MCC) and supposed to be "top quality," I decided to give these CD-Rs a try even though they are a little expensive (spindle of 50 for $23+tax). Well, so far so good. These CD-Rs are MCC and so far, every disc I've burn on them is read by all my drives without problems!! (these are the same drives that had problems with the CMC media).

So to me, I do see a difference in media quality of CD-Rs, even after all these years.

Yeah LOL but we could've been almost twins before - my first nick was 888 or 8888 here, in the end of 2000 or early 2001. I forgot pass or my email acct for 888@.... has been cancelled or something else happened, dont remember now the reason, but I had to create new acct here.
I have to un-kindly highlight here the fact that Baldrick didnt give a shit to reply to my emails in this matter back then... but I dont blame him, Im sure he was very busy, and it doesnt really matter to me under what nick Im posting.

Guys... its obvious if you buy a 100's spindle of no-brands for $4.99 they have to be below any standards. There is no point in discussing any "BestSuperDuper 56X" brand discs that are on a substandard thinner-than-they-supposed-to polymer discs, with just the organic data layer and single, thinniest-as-possible layer of lacquer on top of that. Yes I've seen and even bought such "see-through" shitty blanks (I just call them "see-thru"), but I wouldn't consider them as a real CD-R since almost everything about them is not up to the standards. Im affraid some may not even have the right diameter

Yes, I was being sarcastic, but also it is a fact that any regular brand CD-Rs nowaday are fully compatible with any CD-R/RW writers, and they all burn at their rated speeds too - on any writer, something that wasn't the case just few years ago. IMO market has already 'regulated' CD-R medias, and they have reached that stable/comfortable level where customers know what to expect and manufacturers know what to make and what to avoid.
Kind of like audio cassettes reached their stable/comfy level some 10 years ago - everyone knew chrome TDK SA are excellent and Memorex type I were to be avoided.
Theres nothing new to be expected from CD-Rs Im affraid. They already reached their peak about 1-2 years ago when 52x/56x speed and 99+min capacity CD-Rs were introduced.
In few years CD-Rs become obsolete as audio cassettes are today, and thats the end of story.

Wow, what a coincidence that you used to be 8888!!! How did you think up that name? If people were to not pay attention, those two names would be indistinguishable, leading to all sorts of confusion.

Yes, it would be confusing at least.
As to origins of triple eights I dont think I have to explain it to *you* in particular?

Well, my forum name stands for a view from the bottom of six hot girls riding a bicycle naked sorta like Queen's "Fat Bottom Girls". Also, I like a name that "looks" as opposed to "reads". Reading is stupid. Finally, it was the first thing that came to mind when I had to ask some urgent questions when I still made VCDs.

Of course, maybe that isnt what "888s" means to you? I just hope it isn't some kind of all-man sex train like in the army! Just kidding.

To stay on topic, I will also mention that I have media I can look through and it sucks incredibly.
