Sounds like a media problem if you are seeing the same thing on more than one drive.

What media did you use and what speed?

If you still have the files on your hard drive, burn at a lower speed. If you get the same results, try a different brand of disc.

I used to use the same programs as you, but found DVDShrink does the job much quicker and easier.

    DVD-R or DVD+R?

  8. If it plays fine on anything, it was authored and burned correctly. If it messes up somewhere else it is either the player or that player not likeing that media. In my experience, recorded DVD+-RW is compatible on more players where many players don't like certain +-R media. I suspect (which means I have no proof) the specs for RW media are tighter and therefore more universally compatible. This is just an obsevation.
If it works, don't fix it.

  9. as the previus replies say, not all dvd players like all kinds of media, some are also picky maybe your friends player doesnt`play DVD R discs, or maybe only likes -R or -RW or +R or +RW, could be the encoding process aswell some times some players cant handle pcm dual layer audio or DTS, could be a lot of things. I thing yopur friend is going to start trying out different media, formats, frame rates, audio types. It is hard to say for now which is his problem.
