I've tried using dvd capture to obtain stills of a frame but run into several issues. first both the apple dvd player and the video capture player appear in tandem and it's possible to play the dvd with both: should i disable the apple dvd player and only open the dvd in dvd capture? Trouble is i haven't been successful in opening the disc with the dvd capture as the disc ineevitably opens in the apple dvd player and asks me if i want to begin where last viewed or beginning of disc. If I want to run dvd capture do i have to/ should i disable the apple dvd player, as the dvd capture player seems more equipped with its step button to capture stills when the dvd is paused?

Secondly, and more problematically than the competing players is that even when I take the capture in full screen mode as the dvd capture program insists (i think) that it is only capable of capturing in I still have to "go behind" the screen in order to get the dvd capture player once the dvd has been paused by the apple player that insists on playing the disk and that remains in the forefront of the screen to. When I get my cursor on the dvd capture player, the screen is no longer the full screen and in taking the capture the desktop also gets involved in the "shot." the picture "taken" is no longer of the frame but also includes the in the background the blue and other stuff on the desktop of the PB.

I've tried running the VLC player, as I read in the feedback to the program that that works bettter because one doesn't have to be in full screen mode ...i guess?? The VLC player was also competing with the apple dvd player it seemed to me as the apple player kept asking if i wanted to run the dvd again from the beginning or from where last viewed? So Apple DvD player insists on taking precedence. (One more thing with the Apple Dvd player is that when I inserted the disc, it started to play automatically, though not the disc but a vdeo_ts folder of a film I had previously not finished watching. I had to open the video_ts folder of the inserted disc in the dvd player in order for the player to play the dvd being inserted for capture via dvd capture.)

In short, anyone been succeful with taking captures of a dvd using DvD Capture? What steps did you take, how did you avoid avoid capturing the background, the desktop etc. in the take?
Did you use VLC player etc.?

Thanks a lot for any help,
    regards

Why not just use Capture ME?
Play the DVD in DVD player,
pause when it gets where you
want, then use Capture Me to
    capture the still.

    OR,
rip the DVD using OSEX, and
take the m2v into DVDSP2 and capture
your stills that way, from the timeline.

Thanks much. I'll try it and get back to you. I've heard a lot about the OsEx program. How does it compare to MactheRipper if you've tried either?

    Thanks again,

Or, you could just open the DVD with YadeX, reduce it down to Objects and save the frame right off the DVD.

    Your welcome!
    Glad it worked for you.
As for OSEX, it used to be king of the Mac rippers,
but MTR 2.0 has taken over.

if you are looking for screen capture of a dvd, you cant do that natively with the OSX screen capture.

as pointed out capture me will work. I use SnapzProX only because it came on my mac when i bought it. Its pretty cool. you can even do movie captures that turn out pretty nice!

its shareware but you can at least check it out with the demo.
