I seem not to have the option of Switching or checking if I'mn in PIO or DMA mode anymore.
When I right click on my computer, The system properties box appears. From there I'd click on the hardware option. From there I'd click device manager. The Device manager box would pop-up. I'd go to the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers option and click the + sign. The drop down tree gives me The Intel® 82801 blah, blah, blah ATA controller option and the Primary and secondary IDE Channel option. I'd right click the primary IDE and a box pops-up I used to have an Advanced option which allowed me to switch from DMA to PIO only, but now the advanced tab isn't there any more. There is only the troubleshooting option in the General section of the primary IDE Channel dialog box. From this information, can anyone tell me what has happend. Oh, and I've already did a system restore and still the same thing

Try deleting the IDE and rebooting the pc. If you have optical drives (dvd burner, cd burner) check your BIOS if it is being recognized, set it to AUTO.
Use this site to ENABLE DMA in XP.

Hey Budz, Thanks for your quick reply. Can you break down your instruction a bit. I want to be absolutely sure of what you are sugessting before I go tamperring around

In device manager, right click on the ide channels and choose "uninstall" and re-boot.
It will re-install them when you reboot and you should have the option back.

I unistalled both the primary and secondary IDE channels, but I still don't have the DMA PIO option. The only option that is given is General, Driver, and Resources. The Advance option just isn't there. Could there be another program or something causing this. Something like Intel Application Accellerator; Just asking. Any other ideas

Hi, You said "you don't have the option anymore", I assume you had these options at one time? If so, did you install newer drivers since then? What chipset does your motherboard have? What O/S are using? If you installed Busmastering drivers those options may disappear, miniport drivers usually show those options. Some detailed system info would help.

I'm running XP Home. As for as new drivers, I have'nt installed any unless they were installed automatically by another program. Is there any way to tell what drivers I have installed. How do I find what chipset my motherboard has. If miniport drivers show these options, then where can I get miniport drivers. I've just updated to the latest version of DVD Decrypter. Thats the only thing that I have downloaded and installed since the last time that I've switched back to DMA mode after updating my firmware to 2.1A

Hello, You have a pre-loaded and pre-built computer I guess? Did your system come with a driver disk? Windows XP I stay away from myself....sorry, can't help you much from here...good luck man!

I was basically having the same problem as you awhile back. It happened after I installed Intels Application Accelerator. Do you have this software installed? You may want to try to uninstall it. While this software did speed up loading of some software on my system it did have several side effects on my system at least. First it elliminated the option to select PIO or DMA modes on my drive controllers. The second thing that occured was that my video capture card would just stop capturing part way through a capture. Both these problems went away after uninstalling the Intel software. Hope this helped & GOOD LUCK!

If you have nforce chipset on your motherboard you may want to use another driver from this site: http://mwarhead.motherboardfaqs.com/news.php -
Hey KTH, I just deleted the Intel Acceleration Application and still no luck. When you uninstalled IAA did you have to do anything else to regain acess to the DMA/PIO option. I normally Click the property tab on my computer and go to Device manager then Primary/Secondary properties/Advance. Is this how you do it

Sometimes your motherboard manufacturer has a utility that you can run to check. Try their website.

I had the same problem check out this thread
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=94831&highlight=bf6239 -
James636 I basically do the same thing that you do to get to the PIO/DMA adjust screen. The thing is that the version of IAA that I was using is probably a different version than you were using. It's been a while since I stopped using it. This could explain why uninstalling the software worked for me and not for you. Different versions might handle uninstall differently and leave different things behind. That's why I never trust uninstall completely. I bet if you look in your Programs Folder you would still find some folders of programs that were uninstalled with some files still there. One more thing you mentioned was that the problem seemed to happen after installing DVD Decryptor. Since your using Windows XP have you tried using the Restore function located in your Accessorie/System Tools folder to restore to a point before installing the new version of DVD Decryptor or perhaps even IAA? Please note that if you do decide to try this make sure to backup all important data beforehand since doing the restore may also delete some important data and all programs installed after the Restore point. If this doesn't work you may eventually have to do a clean install as a last resort. One thing that I always do before installing any new software is to create a backup of my boot drive using Symantec's Drive Image. That way I can always clean restore my system if problems occur after installation. I know that it maybe too late in your case, but it's something to think about for the future.

Thanks KTH for being so passionate about helping. I rsolved my problem. At first I was unistalling the primary and secondary IDE. Then I found out that it was the Main IDE that I had to unistall and install the regular system32 drivers; that fixed the problem.
Maybe you can help with another problem. I have some Verbatim 4x media. I use DVD Decrypter, Nero 6, Alcohol 120% and Ulead DVD Factory to burn my DVD-r. I'm using the new 2.1a Firmware which is said to allow a 4x Burn. The problem is that I can only achieve a 2x burn speed. There are alot of people who say that they burn 4x with the mentioned firmware, but I'm thinking that they made the same mistake that I made. When I use Nero 6 and Ulead DVD Factory, it displays that it burns at 4x. But it was only when I used Alcohol 120% That I noticed that I was only burning at 2x. Although Alcohol Displays 4x in the info dialog it also shows the current burn rate in the upper part of the software.
My system info: XP Home Edition, 1.7GHZ, 256-Ram
