  1. for quality and size?

if we compress 2 files to the same size, but the one is wmv the other mpg, which will be better

  2. Assuming you know what you are doing, wmv should always give better quality/file size ratio. Especially Windows Media 9.

However, MPEG1 files are playable on virtually any platform without any additional codecs needed.

Also, bad conversion skills can make even the best format look like crap.

If you don't care much about platform/OS compatibility, use wmv. If you want the files to be most compatible, use MPG.

WMV9 uses MPEG4 codecs, whereas by MPG you mean MPEG2.

Working from a pure source, then WMV would be about 1/2 the size of a similiar MPEG2. This is using real-world settings, not what M$ says is "DVD-Quality". On non-action movies, you can compress a lot more (joys of variable framerate).

  4. Umm, WMV9 does not use MPEG4 and MPG can mean both MPEG1 and 2, but usually, most MPG files are MPEG1.

    Universal compatibility = better format.

Hard to say according to this: http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/wmv.cfm

The term "proprietary" would probably apply....

  9. I believe this link should pretty much clear it.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/WM7/mpeg4.aspx

You can download a whitepaper .doc file which if you read it carefully, says that WMV and MPEG4 is different formats and that WMV is superior to MPEG4.

M$'s propaganda to push it's own proprietary format instead of MPEG4.
