I use it to record the Karaoke LaserDisc discs which were very popular in the Asia countries some 15 years ago.

    What was that?

I don't recognize the model number!

I do seem to recall a Pioneer LD player that had 2 trays so it could hold 2 LaserDiscs at once. That is the "oddest" model I can remember.

  6. Mummy Face... That brings back some great flame wars.

I loved LaserDisc. It was THE cool thing to have in high school. I could pickup sophisticated chics AND shmooze their dads in no time. I'd just show up at the door and say, "Movie night, anyone?" What an easy way to get laid.

I love the LD format. I still bid on them on ebay. A really great way to build up a collection for DVD transfer...if you have the time to bother with it.

And so many titles are not going to apear on DVD for decades if at all.

I have 2 LD players, both Panasonic, the LX - 900 a super quality machine with built in TBC (very rarely needed, but I have a few discs that had some flicker and TBC knocked it right out.

And the LX - 200, a solid player plays both sides automatically. I like the fact that this player powers down after 20 or so minutes after finishing. This is nice for when I am capturing or recording LDs when I have gone to sleep. I mean if these machines will eventually burn out, I would like to save every last minute if I can.

And used stores are also selling off LDs at rock bottom prices. I got Golden Age of Looney Toons Vols. 1, 2 & 3 box sets for $5.00 each, and two of them were still sealed. Lots of DVD authoring fun to be had.

Found Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense, Japan import for $3.00. Now this one is out on DVD. But I would just as soon have the laser at this price. It will be fun to do my DVD of it, and compare it to the new DVD issue. Just to see if I can get anywhere near the legit release quality. I am waiting to do many of these, but want them done in double layer discs for over 69min. DVDs.

Richard Thompson - Live Across a Crowded Room, 1986 concert was one that I had to pay $36.00 for on ebay. I had been out bid a few times and decided I wanted the damn thing. No DVD ever on that one I'll bet. I did that 82min. show to 2 DVD-Rs. Love it.

Aren't there cartoons on those sets that have since been pulled due to their nature i.e., not being PC enough?

    Probably, not sure though.

One thing I'm unclear about, is that the laserdisc boxed sets were put out by MGM (I believe Ted Turner bought up alot of the earlier WB cartoons.)

I haven't attempted to match up the titles, but does that mean these laserdisc boxed sets contain separate titles than the recently released "Looney Tunes - The Golden Collection" DVD set? Because I believe Warner Bros. released the DVD set, and unless WB bought back the the library from MGM, I would think there shouldn't be an overlap in titles, but I could be mistaken.

Turner had a long term (ten year) deal for home video and cable rights for this material. Long since expired, the DVDs I would imagine would leave out tons of toons the LS sets contained.

I have not checked them toon for toon, but the way the LD box sets have held their value, I would say there is material being left off of the DVDs.

  19. hiptune, thanks for the clarification. One of these days I'll have to do a toon for toon comparison.

Hey, the LD boxed sets couldn't have held their value too well, if you got them for $5 each!

I wish I had that. I saw it on sale at a laserdisc store years ago, for several hundred dollars. The store has long gone out of business.

The first release of "Golden Age of Looney Tunes" (volume labels came after the success of this first group) had Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips. The second release replaced this one with a cartoon also later released on the third or fourth volume. I have converted all five volumes to DVD that I give to my nieces and nephews at Christmas (1 volume per).

I have a friend in San Diego who had a massive collection of vintage laserdiscs (I was converting them to DVD for "him"). Unfortunately, the San Diego fires last year burned his house (and his collection) to the ground. Bummer.

  22. Just a question concerning players: I have a Pioneer CLD-V2800 industrial player that has what looks like a serial port on the back. I don't have the manual but the port says external control. What exactly could you do w/ it?

i think those are for the wired versions of the barcode pens. if i recall correctly, pioneer offered 2 versions--wired barcode pens and RF wireless. basically, some LDs comes with a sheet of barcodes, each barcode for a certain chapter (identified by descriptors either above or below the barcode). you pressed and held a red button on the pen and scanned the barcode. after u hear the pen beep, you press the blue (or was it green?) button on the pen and the barcode is fed into the LD player via a port or RF. i remember in 3rd grade math...all of us fought over the chance to scan the barcode....those were the days...

It's for serial control of the functions. This was for interactive use of a LD with a training program, or something like that. I have a SONY industrial model with the same feature.

  25. I believe it is for external control. For instance LD arcade games such as Dragon's Lair used something like that. If you have the Dragons Lair LDs you can download the Daphne emulator and play it on your PC. Also, there is some software you can download to control the player through the PC. I got it off the web a while back but I have not tried it yet. I believe it is from Pioneer.

DRAGON'S LAIR brings back fond memories

At a comic book convention in the early 90's I bought a VHS video where someone recorded the LaserDisc to it ... plays through all the scenes correctly then each death for that scene before moving on to the next scene.

I've played a few of the old PC versions which totally sucked ass ... I'll have to get that DVD version sometime since it actually appears to finally be like the original i.e., exactly the same "graphics".

Don't forget SPACE ACE and the one with that Japanese Lupin the 3rd guy and I seem to remember there was an "action" helicopter LD game too!

This is for serial connection to your PC (you could control it this way).
    Some details are here:
