  1. I am now unable to rip audio CDs to MP3. I have no idea as to what I could have done to cause this but I have. Using a freeware MP3 ripper yesterday it would identify only 1 of 3 of my optical drives, my NEC2500a, but wouldn't open any tracks on it, infact it didn't even display any. I've noticed, also, that audio CDs don't play on my system. On a side note VCDEasy will no longer recognise any of my CDWriters. I can read from these drives without a hitch and my NEC DVD burner and my LiteOn CDRW both work fine under Nero. I have that ASPI thing installed and the diagnostic tool tells me its working fine.

Kind of risky, but you might want to try uninstalling the IDE controller in question(using Device Manager). Plug-and-play should re-install all the necessary drivers on the next startup. Worked for me in the past.

  3. The drives work fine - except when I am trying to rip CDs to MP3. I think I'm looking at a reinstall here. Strangely a trial version of MP3 Workshop actually will rip from any drive, but its the only one so far.

  4. I heard something a while back about Roxio installs that interfere with normal CD function. I guess a few different applications use the Adaptec file; "CDRAL.dll" (i think was the name).

Basically it puts itself between Windows and your hardware.
