Well I don't post much as I can't do much (anything) video related with my current setup, but I do read what goes on on this part of the board every now and then.
A couple of weeks ago I started coming in more regularly as I plan on getting a G5 when they are released later this month and one of the first things I planned on doing was backing up a lot of DVDs.
Although I haven't actually used MTR, I have downloaded previous versions to have a look at it.
I was very much looking forward to using it for many reasons. Not least of which was the reason behind the software. Someone willing to put time and effort in on behalf of the wider mac community and not only that, but creating in the process what seems to be an admired, well designed little app and free.
Licences are there to be abided by but I always thought MTR was fully in accordance with the terms detailed in the licences of the components it used.
It is a great shame that MTR has to die. If it's a definite decision, we will all lose something of great value. I, of course don't even know what I'll be missing but it's a shame all the same.
But, with or without MTR, I thought I'd take a moment to thank all those behind it for making the effort and coming up with an important piece of up to date software for the mac community.
Your effort on this project is very much appreciated.
I would like to see MTR live on but I understand your (GB) reasoning.
Here's hoping that this isn't the end though and once again, thanks for all the effort. -

To me , its not the case of reworking the app to be compliant, If the RIGHTFULL OWNERS of the libs in question had approached me and asked me to make relevant changes to become compliant , I , myself , would of only been to happy to enter into a form of communication with them.
BUT.....
To get it from WW that a , and you must pardon the language i am about to use , but i realy have no other word to describe the originators of the initial comments / threat , A BUNCH OF PRICKS , want to force me to reveal code that I WROTE WITHOUT USING USING ANY PART OF THE GPL code , by underhanded methods, just really pissed in my garden big time.
So lets clear this up.......
TocGen .. part of the DVDAuthor project ....
I rewrote it , and wrapped it up in a OBJ-C class..
I will post the code , in a NON COMPILING FORM.
LibDVDCSS & libDVDREAD......
Both are COMPILED IN at BUILD TIME and used to parse info from the disk.
NEITHER HAVE BEEN MODIFIED IN ANY FORM... THE SOURCE IS AS ORIGINAL FORM.
if i need to make a patch to LibDVDREAD to enable a funky disk to be parsed , i would of passed on the update code to the VideoLan guys to include in their latest build..
You know.... it sickens me that people will stoop so low as to get what they want......and im going to be blunt here......
SOME PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ***VERY INTERESTED*** IN MY REGION/RCE/UOPS REMOVAL CODE.....I BELIEVE THAT THE REAL MOTIVE BEHIND THESE PEOPLE WHO HAVE MADE SUCH ACCUSATIONS/THREATS OR WHATEVER PEOPLE WISH TO CALL THEM , ARE SOLELY TO GET THE CODE THAT MAKES THESE THING TICK , SO THEY CAN ADD IT TO THERE OWN **OLDER** APPS...
SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHY I SHOULD SPEND ALL MY HARD TIME WRITING CODE FOR OTHERS WHO CAN NOT BE BOTHERED, JUST TO HIJACK IT , AND CALL IT THEIR OWN.
that to me is theft...
So in my opinion these people are trying to manipulate the GPL in order to steal.

hi geezerbuttz
this is really bad news since i had really high hopes for the mac getting along with windows based rippers. i fully understand that you're angry and who wouldn't? i hope that the folks from videolan see that mtr is a unique app and should be supported and not destroyed!!!
bendermac -
Ok, Geezer and I have had a chat, and we'll tentatively keep MTR active for now, and put new versions out. We'll have to see if we can bring MTR into compliance with the GPL without sacrificing too much performance. Sorry to have scared all of you, and this was not a publicity stunt. The future of MTR is not too clear at this point, but for now, we'll cautiously stay our course. So as of now, MTR IS NOT DEAD. Rejoice!

In that case I'll look forward to giving it a spin in a few weeks. Hopefully, by that time Apple will have announced the new G5s.
Thanks for the update. I hope the licencing issues can be worked out to everyone's satisfaction. -

The JACKET_P folder is what keeps the images that are displayed on some DVD players when you hit stop. Since 2.0, we've added the ability to copy all the extra content on DVDs, in addition to the VIDEO_TS folder. They aren't necessary to make a working DVD movie, but some people like to keep them, and they certainly don't hurt, as long as there's enough space for them.

Thanks WW
OK sorry this should be in a new thread but here it is: I ripped Last Samauri using MTR 2. Then I used dvd2one. I am left with a empty AUDIO_TS folder and a VIDEO_TS folder that is 4.38(4,704,581,632 bytes)
When I drag these two over to toast 6.0.5 i get a error "theres not enough free space on this disc 2,297,472 sectors are needed 4.4GB -- only 2,295,104 sectors 4.4GB are available.
I have thrown away the first output from dvd2one and reran it with the new output with the same results..... i have also tried two different dvd-r discs .....
any ideas whats wrong?

I would like to echo the statements of Kryton, particularly those in his second to last post, as we are nearly 100% in synch with regard to our future Mac intentions and certainly 100% in synch with MTR sympathies.
Good luck guys, and thanks for ALL THAT YOU DO!!! -

with these updates.... -
Well, don't come whining to us when MTR does crash for you with APE hacks installed. We do not support running MTR in conjunction with Unsanity APE hacks for a reason.

Guess I must be blessed.
I've used Audio HiJack Pro since BEFORE MTR
was a twinkle in Geezerbuttz eye, and every
MTR since that intital "conception" and hadn't had
A SINGLE Problem.
I'm curious WW...what specific problems are you
alluding to? As far as the APE 1.42 module,
other than allowing the "hijacking" of apps
and the redirection of audio packets to
a designated "hard" location, the APE 1.42
module doesn't even show any " haxing"
in my system? Perhaps your quote is directed to the
"FruitMenu/Kalideoscope/ I gotta have shiny icons
and wierd window bars group", and not
to users of AHP, AH, or Wiretap.....
As far as I can tell, and I only use AHP which relies on APE 1.42,
AND nothing else that Unsanity makes ( Fruitmenu, etc.),
that there is no real "haxing" to the degree of
Desktop/File Structure Manipulation going on...
MTR 2.0 is just as stable as 1.3, 1.5, 1.55, and 1.6 have been for me.
And I still record my Internet streams and capture audio from
DVDs and fix audio from bad avi's and mpgs using AHP.
I only am stating this as to not discourage people who have paid
for AH and AHP, or that are using Wiretap, in to thinking that
since these apps use the APE 1.42 module, that they cannot use
MTR due to the fact that it might not work, or be crippled in some way.
I have ZERO experience with Fruitmenu, etc. so I cannot comment
on what the APE 1.42 module does to systems in that regard.
HOWEVER, in regards to Audio Hijack, Audio Hijack Pro, and Wiretap,
I can speak with Certanity, that there are ZERO bad affects
in having ANY Rouge Amobea software (which uses the APE 1.42
to some degree) and MTR 2.0. -
I've been using APE....forever. Well, at least since Cleardock came out. Never had a problem. I paid for FruitMenu and something else that I can't remember. But the only thing I still have installed is ClearDock. Is there some other method to obtain a cleardock that's better? I'd change if there was something better.....
-
I don't believe that Wiretap uses APE. I use Wiretap all the time and don't have any APE instalation.
william -
The specific problems I'm alluding to are users having MTR unexpectedly quit, sending us their crash logs, and 4 times out of 5, they'll have APE threads mucking around in MTR's memory. Uninstalling APE or disabling the hacks for MTR usually fixes the problem. Therefore, APE is evil!

PS I know zip about how APE works, but like the other poster I've also always had cleardock and audio hijack installed and havent noticed any MTR problems. My (worthless) 2c -
