Is it possible to read a .XLS file without having Excel software? Someone sent me a file and I need to read it, but I certainly don't want to buy anything for only 1 file. My OS is WinXP.

  3. Get Excel Viewer. It's free from MS.
You can't edit/change nor save anything, but you can view .xls files.

I tried Excel Viewer before posting this thread, but it doesn't work with WinXP.

  5. Does openoffice include a spreadsheet app?, if so i think it works with ms formats.

EDIT : checked openoffice.org, and it does support reasonable complexity and lower .xls files.

either that or get a close friend who has excell to open it for you
they can then export it to something universal, like html which you can access easly.

    Oh for the...

Have them send it to you as a PDF if all you need to do is view the thing. If you need to make changes to it then you're going to need Excel anyway.
