  1. I'm debating whether or not to get a dual layer burner or an 8X regular burner. I am willing to spend $100. THe NcC one seems in my range. Any suggestions?

Get a regular burner. The media is on the market, and is fairly cheap. You can usually find blanks for under a dollar a disc. With the software that is out, you can't really tell much of a difference in the quality between the ripped disc and the original.

Buy what you can afford. Dual Layer media will be very expensive when it is first released. If you wanna wait till the dual layer media prices come down then that would be the best bet. If you're in a hurry to get a dvd burner then purchase a 8x or 4x burner. As I suggested buy what you can afford and do some research on different brands of burners.
Go to www.cdfreaks.com and look at all the different forum sites they have on different brands such as PIONEER, PLEXTOR, NEC, LITEON, BENQ, LG & BTC. Every brand has their problems. Lots of variables in authoring, editing and burning dvds. From the brand of media you use to how the drive is set up in your pc to what software you use. Good luck!

  7. My buddy just got a Pioneer 107 and it burns 4x media @ 6x with great Kprobe scans (on my Lite-On). It's not that much slower than 8x. I have a Lite-On & I would buy a Pioneer if I had to do it all over again.

  9. Get the LiteON 812 or the NEC 2500. Both have capability of being upgraded to dual layer with hacked firmwares.

No dual layer media out yet to test out if those hacks will truly work. I'd rather wait and get a dual layer burner after all the darn bugs are worked out. Of course that's just my opinion

Read about those hacks at cdfreaks.com at their respective forums, NEC & LITEON. Or at cdrlabs.com or at http://forum.firmware-flash.com/viewforum.php?f=2

  12. I have the same problem, I've had my Pioneer 104 for 3 years now and have offered it to a friend so need to buy a new one.

I'll probably go for the Liteon (DL) burner as its only a little over the price of a pioneer. Just wish I could get another pioneer as its been a great drive but the DL supports seems like it will be months away. DL disks are not yet available and will be expensive but at least when prices drop I'll have the drive to use it.

  13. Well. I have decided to just stick with a regular burner. I'll wait until DL burners drop in value and DL media becaues more accessible.

I am just buring dvd backups right now. There is no need to burn DL unless i want extras and what not. Might as well stick with what i know until DL advances.

Now to find the perfect dvd burner. The quest goes on.

    Any Suggestions?

  14. i just got the sony double layer for $200....however, i'll be returning it soon mainly because it will burn DL at 2.4x....which means i'll have to wait about an hour to burn a DL disk. i'd much rather wait for a faster DL burner.

but as a regular single layer burner, it works fine. however, you can find cheaper single layer burners that burn at the same speed as this sony (which burns at a max of 8x).

  15. Regular burner.

I want to see at least 50-100 members here say they burned a DL disc and it worked on their various DVD players.

  16. i would stick to a regular burner.....because the dual burners are too slow, and the media will be expensive like HELL......

i own a NEc 1100....perfect, even for cheap Compusa dvds, which are princos.....
others say that pioneer is the best....

well ??? i would stick to nec or pioneer, sony and others are just garbage, too many problems....

BUT, instead of buying a pioneer, a would buy a nec 2510, which is dual for the same money.....

    so many options.....

The latest firmware upgrade, 1.15, has tons of support for 8X. I am sold on mine and would never switch to any other brand.
Still a few bugs in the system...

  18. I've used a variety of Optorite CD and DVD recorders. No complaints so far, and overall media compatibilty isn't too bad.

  20. "which means i'll have to wait about an hour to burn a DL disk."

Actually, it should be 41 minutes, just 7 more than a single layer.

What's dual layer? Is that one layer +r & one layer -r?

Double layer Nec, 2510a is around $90 now.

Double Layer media on the other hand, not out yet except for the cheapo stuff, about $5.50 if you buy $550.00 Verbs coming out in July, limited supply, price? Perhaps $10, $14 who knows.

  21. ok. Looks like i am getting Pioneer or NEC. I will see when i go to the computer expo this weekend.

Is there a huge difference from like the very cheap (printable) DVD-Rs to the expensive DVD-'Rs? For example, http://www.meritline.com/dvd-r-ink-jet-printable.html

Like the .61 cent ones? lol

p.s. my friend brought over dvdxcopy and i installed it. HOW THE HE11 (sensored enough?) do i get the stupid spyware off. I alraedy did an adaware scan and i sitll have something wrong with my IE!?!? So annoying. Just one more reason not to use dvdxcopy.

What, exactly, is wrong with your IE? How has it been affected?

  23. well, for one, when i search at google, a page that looks like google it takes abnormally long to load the first page, and the first page only has the Title link, and the discription, but it doesn't have the link underneat hthe discription, and the "cached" and "similar pages" option. and the font is bigger. Also when i click on page 2, it brings me to the real googles page 1, and it displays as page 1 on the real googles website.

    lol. does that make anysense?

oh, well thats the only thing that is visually affected that i could find. Oh wait, there is this stupid pop up that pops up. I'll post what it says next time it does. It isn't an IE pop up. Its a porgram pop up.

Do your toolbars move around randomly when you launch a new instance of IE?

If you have any extra toolbars installed go to:

Tools -> Internet options -> Advanced.

Deselect 'Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)' and restart IE. Browse the web as normal for a while to test if this solves the problem or not.

You may have installed a toolbar that interferes with IE (or was a beta).

To re-enable your toolbars, just reverse the above procedure to get them back.
