  1. Hi,

I'm not sure if i put this in the right section of the forums....so sorry if im off. but i am building a new computer and i was wondering if anyone knew of any graphics cards that are good for just video editing. I have been editing for awhile now...so i already have a firewire card and all that, so i dont need it to capture video. I read that i should be looking for something that can do Mpeg and realtime stuff? i did find this card by MSI...FX5600XTVTDR128....http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=FX5600XT-VTDR128&class=vga and am thinking about it cause it recieved editors choice by tomshardware...but not really sure if it will do what i want. So anyway im on a little but of a budget and need to keep it around $100 if possible, oo and i would also like to have support for duel monitors. thanks for all the help...greatly appreciated

What a coincidence..... I was at Micro Center today having a new 250GB hard drive installed, & I was going to have this graphics card installed also. I started talking to one of the tech guys & he said to wait until the end of the Summer to upgrade on any graphics card, because there has been a big advancement on the video memory barrier & the cards are about to go through the roof performance wise.

This doesn't really apply to capture cards.

what graphics card you use for video editing makes no diff. what so ever ...

except if you use a app that uses opengl (boris red for example) , then you need a opengl card ...

matrox are popular for video editing because of the 3 head design (one of which can be ntsc/pal out or pc monitor) and great color rendition and stablity ... ati and nvidia are just as popular.
dont spend a lot of money on a graphics card if it is a NLE machine only ..or if you dont need 3 outputs ..

REAL TIME video editing doesnt rely on the graphics card but on a dedicated seperate card ....

I would suggest a Matrox P750, or a G550, depending on your needs. Excellent TV out, multihead, and fast and stable for 2D needs such as video editing.

The P750 has three out, which can be three monitors, or two monitors and a TV.

The G550 has two out, which can be two monitors, or a monitor and a TV.

I have both cards, but I think the P750 is a better card.

I also have an ATI A-I-W 8500DV, which is very nice, but the TV output from the Matrox is clearly better than the TV output from the ATI card. AT this time, the ATI card is in a PC dedicated to PVR - I no longer use my VRCs at all.

as i stated -- neither one will do video editing "better" ..

but one factor is that the ati will have better mpeg decoding onboard and the matrox is better for color .....

i use matrox cards exclusivly for triple screen- but i would not kick any one of the better ati or better nvidia cards out of bed either ..

I have tried an ati card (not sure which one) and for sure it played HD mpeg files smoother

  10. supposedly the upcoming nivida card will have an onboard mpeg encoder
on it. that could prove interesting. I think ATI is tossing one on as well.
