  1. For the past several days I have been trying to encode an .avi file to a .mpg2 format using TMPGEnc 3.0 Xpress Trial, and every time I go through the encoding process, the screen of the output is re-sized to something different from the source...

I posted this question as an add-on to my NTSC vs. PAL post, but I think that post's topic is totaly irrelevant to the new issue and will probobly be ignored by those who actualy know the solution, because the question is not set properly...

video is 23.976 FPS res: 576*240 (2.21:1) XVID Mpeg-4 Codec (the black edges are cut off, its in a letterbox), and according to the graph calculations from the pages given to me here, its 2.4:1, not 2.21:1, I dont know why the prog I use to check says that when (576 / 240 = 2.4) and not 2.21 ...

info from: AVICodec program I use to identify and the one that tells me its 2.21:1

the program i'm using to encode is TMPGEnc 3.0 Xpress Trial Version

I set source of it to Progressive, Top Field First, and every possible resolution setup: Pixel 1:1, Pixel 40:33 (16:9 NTSC), Image 2.21:1, Pixel 16:11 (PAL 16:9)... and it has not come out right...

output has allways been set to NTSC, Image 16:9, Res: 720*480, VBR, DC Component precision 9bit, Video Mode (I have tried both Progressive and 3:2 PullDown in Video Mode).. results were different, but neither fit the full-screen picture size of the original .avi...

ok, you got the info, could anyone tell me why every time I encode the video does not come out the same size on full-screen as the original? ...

oh, and when I play the original it has no black borders, its a letterbox, while all the encodes come with their own borders... i'm not sure if thats whats causing it, if its natural, or if I have ability to remove it...

please help, i've been encoding this video for 4 days on different settings, leaving it overnight and when i go to work, and nothing seems to have worked...

I'm not leaving out that this might be some kind of stupid mistake or misconception that I might have had, and not an issue with TMPGEnc 3.0 Xpress...

allso, I did read the TMPGEnc help stickie post up top, and only found one relevant thing, but it was for an earlier version of the program that I didnt find in this one...

  2. Under 'Set Output' click the Add button and choose 'MPEG Output.' This gives you a screen where you can choose the screen size YOU want.

  3. I dont know what settings to set as the output... and theres a warning that it might not be DVD write compatible... am I suppose to try to set the original .avi resolution as the resolution of this new output?

Your source is MPEG-4 so in TMPGEnc you need to set the source file as 1:1 VGA

Then you can select either 16x9 DVD or regular 4:3 DVD just make sure you select KEEP ASPECT RATIO

Now it should come out properly!

  5. next to the "keep aspect ratio" button, theres an option window for: Full Sreen, Full Screen (no margin), Center, Center (custom size)... which one should i choose? ... as you prolly wont respond in time as i'm going to sleep now, i'm gonna leave it for regular full screen and see what happens overnight...

allso, for video mode, should I choose 3:2 Pulldown Playback or Progressive on output?

I'm not sure what to tell you because I am familiar with TMPGEnc Plus not the newer TMPGEnc Xpress and it sounds like some options are slightly different.

You definately want KEEP ASPECT RATIO but as for the other options ... I'm not sure.

    P.S.
I think you want to select 3:2 Pulldown on Playback VS Progressive on output which just sounds like a deinterlacer option (not what you want with video that is 23.976fps to begin with).

Searching our GUIDES section here I found this link:

    http://www.dvd-guides.com/guides.php?category=othertodvd&name=tmpgencxpress

That is a link to a website with a guide on how to use TMPGEnc Xpress

Our GUIDES section here does come in handy
