    Hey guys,

My brother is coming in to town last minute for Memorial day weekend and is in need for an update in his DVD collection. I have a good selection at my house that I wanted to back up for him but unfortunately I only have about 3 discs left(planned on ordering more online next week) and I need to locally run to best buy, fry's, or compusa for blank media. What brand do you guys recommend I pick up? i need DVD-R 4X media. I know both stores carry Fuji, Verbatim, Memorex, and TDK. Do any of those stores carry TY or Ritek manufactured media? Which brand and which store do you guys recommend? I want to make sure he has something that will last. Thanks.

What the heck man? What is your problem? I came on this forum to hopefully get some help from fellow members on here and you reply with a stupid comment. You hope I get CMCs? Man I would go off on you but I'm not in the mood for getting banned.

*For clarification-you could kind of consider the DVD collection my brother's as well since we shared the same movies before he moved out 2 months ago. A few of them I bought on my own. i am backing up our own as well as some of my own collection for personal use only.

get some verbatim dvd-r or fuji dvd-r if you can afford the fuji discs. tdk seems to be using CMC for their dvd media. if you want cheap dvd-r COMPUSA has a sale on 2x dvd-r 50 pack spindle for $19.99, it's their memorial day weekend sale. i don't know if those are PRINCO discs. i'm thinking of buying the spindle just to find out what is the media code and manufacturer.

OK OK sry for the smart ass reply man, i'm in kind of a drunken belligerent mood 2nite, sry 2 take it out on u.

but seriously tho, im not sure if its the best idea to mention ur gonna be copyin movies for ur bro on here. not sure if that is completely legal...kinda in the grey zone of "fair use" and forum rules but im no MOD, so don't listen to me. you could have just said "hey, i need some blank DVDs real quick" and that's that, or if u feel the need to explain, say "its cuz im runnin out of room on my HD."

hey, @ least u know that CMCs are crap! more power to ya.

if ur (or some1 u know is) a costco member they have TDKs (+) that used to be RICOHJPNs for a decent price. they always worked for me. but if they turn out to be CMCs they have a very liberal return policy and will give u cash back even if u burn half of the discs and dont have a receipt.

other than that i don't often buy from retail stores cuz their prices are often too hi and they sell crap media.

Budz (^) has good advice tho.

    g'luck

Go to Walmart and get the Maxell DVD-Rs there. 5 pk is 6.88, 10 pk is 16.44 here in Indiana. High quality media.

That's crazy how each in a 5 pack is less expensive than in a 10 pack.

Hey, I know it is nuts. I have been there several times in the last 2 months and that is the prices. They also had 3 pks for the 6.88 price.

  10. How do we know what to get if we don't know what writer you have? Got to match them perfectly.

naturalzinc, you were spot on in your first post, and even more so after the "explanation".

    2 things, cmusngi29:

    1. When backing up, archiving, etc., there is really no reason to mention your purpose. The less we know about your final use, the better. A better question is "What is some good media for backing up my DVDs?", which you can also find in the media reviews to the left.

    2. There is no Fair Use here. A backup is just that, a backup. It is to be used in case of damage to the original, not simultaneously at a different location. In matters like these, there is no "shared ownership". That is why you cannot send someone (without distribution rights) a portion of the price of a DVD, then download from P2P.
Unfortunately, your brother lost "co-ownership" of the DVDs when he moved out and failed to bring them with him. The loophole you may use is that your brother's place is storage in case of fire or other damage. However, once he "un-stores" them, the loophole is closed. And since you've already stated that the copies are for his use, the loophole never really existed.

It's even stranger that, at Walmart, the 15 pack Maxells (stack-without jewel cases) are more expensive per disc than the 10-pack with cases.
